Before you go and spend money,

just go look here and see how slow you will ride with those gear ratio's

On a 24 Front and 36 back you will need a cadence of 100 which is pretty high to go 8.5km/h on a 26"

At a 60 cadence you will be doing 5km/h.

I hate 1x 11... I Love my 2x10 om my 29er, I would also say check your casset. Try something like a downhill bike casset, you will get a lot of speed but you wont get up a steep hill in 1x1. But it is your choice.

10 Speed Rear Derailleur

10 Speed Chain

New Front Chainrings - 38/26

10 Speed Shifters.

10 Speed Cassette.

There fixed.

The Shimano 9spd RD and Chainrings will work with 10spd setup no problem.

Sram 9spd Rear Derailers doesnt work so lekka with a 10spd setup

And your problems "might" only start when you use 10spd chainrings with a 9spd chain.

Not the other way round as the OP wants to do it.

Funny that, when I sought advice from your very mechanics I was told otherwise, they should be on the sales floor rather :whistling: Would that be cause my crankset is a 3x10? Edited by Caerus

I think that you think I am somewhere else! Haha!

Shimano stuff is much more interchangeable between 9 and 10 than Sram.

Lets take the chain and chainrings for example.

Difference between the chains a width and difference between the chainrings are also width.

If you pur a narrower chain (10) on wider (9) chainrings, it will still work.

If you put wider chain (9) on narrower chainrings (10) that wont work so lekka.

I have tried, tested and played with the stuff. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. But all mechanics have learned by now to give the safe answer. "You can only use 10spd with 10spd" ;)

Hi Tankman,

So I have a 9 speed XTR long cage with a RF Narrow Wide set up.

Will I be able to put a 10 speed shifter, cassette and chain on and tune it to work?

Big question, will this then work with one of the 42 sprockets?

That is correct with road kit.

Shimano changed the pull ratios on their MTB 10 speed stuff

Previously all Shimano MTB stuff worked together (2:1 or 1:2 pull ratio), unfortunately not with 10 speed (1:0.99 or something like that).

Funny thing is that a SRAM 9 speed shifter works with Shimano 10 speed RD, with a small mod entailing a 6mm spacer.

Nope, Shimano is still 2:1

They just called it 2:1 but it is actually 1.7 to 1. Dura Ace is 1.9 to 1

Pull ratio is controlled by the shifter, not the deraileur.

I will explain some more of why and what works later ... got too much work now!

Are you referring to the road stuff still being the same? because that IS still the same.

MTB is NOT the same anymore.

EDIT: I'll wait for your explanation, I'm usually first to question the "wisdom" of sales people.

I have a couple of bits and pieces lying around that I would LOVE to get working together.

Leave front as is, 10 speed cassette, shifter and derailleur.

Or get the 12-36 9speed cassette and leave everything else.
