Self Defense

I think cycling with a gun can be potentially more hazardous to the gun carrier than the attacker unless the carrier is PRACTICED (not only trained) in using the gun in that specific application.

There are many people with a licence to carry the gun because they went through a 10 day or 5 day course in competency. This does not equip you for use in an emergency, high adrenaline, fight or flight scenario. This would require much practice in simulated scenarios that are likely to crop up. The correct response needs to be fluid and fast such that the attacker can see that his potential victim is more likely to succeed than he is. Essentially there needs to be a shift of fear.

I don't know of many people who fit into this category of gun-owner. Seems most gun-owners get a false sense of bravery by virtue of having a gun but when they need to use it, they are not as competent as they like to think they are.

I carry one of these:

and Smith and Wesson pepper spray when I am out.

I know how to use both but have thankfully never had cause to use either yet.

I was mugged in a park in pta years ago. 5 BMs. 1 with a knife 1 with a brick. The 5 surrounded me. I had my gun on Me and did not pull it out. What i did was talk my way out the situation and opened my wallet and kept calm without showing them fear. They took what was in it the cash and i put the wallet back in my pocket with my cards and slowly got into my car and drove away. This happened in the parking area at the park near loftus. The one guy did grab my wrist so i slowly but firmly took his hand off me. The odds 5 to 1 are not good whether armed or not. Usually attackers outnumber you. On a bike you fall and then they have the advantage. I have done krav and it is good it is practical. A determined maybe desperate criminal may have more motivation to attack you than you have ability to fight him off. Just saying. It does happen so quickly.

I like your approach.  That would be a best-case scenario / outcome for me.

Talk and/or run.

Having practiced martial arts 3/4 times a week for 22 years my advice would be to insure your bike and give it up without a fight. If you're able to suss out the situation and know how to fight you'll act accordingly but don't think a few self defence classes will help if you haven't grown up fighting (properly!).

When you absolutely have to defend yourself then it's quite simple, groin and eyes.

Self defense...one thing to remember is what ever action you take there will be consequences.

a jail cell is not a pleasant place to spend a couple days...guilty or not...no matter how big or strong you think you are...once in a cell with a group of others...they will eventually tire you out and get what they want.

the court case takes years to complete..the stuff they dig up about you and your past will be bought up...and i mean every little thing to make you look like a violent aggressive person...no matter how big or small the incident...even stuff you did at school.

do what you feel think you need to do..be it self defense classes...carrying a weapon...knife...gun...piece of wire...sharpened spoke...whatever...just understand that the action you take is going to affect your life and that of your family.

run away if you can would be the best advise...but if you need to protect yourself or some one close to you try to keep it as simple and with the least amount of damage to the criminal...it is so easy to get caught up in the moment.
