Headset help please

I am busy with a road bike build for a friend and finally found a headset that fits the bike... but it stands about 6mm higher than the top of the head tube.

The recess for the bearing is not deep enough for the setup to drop further so now has this gap.

Any suggestions? I am considering having the casing, in which it came, cut to 6mm to create a spacer to take up the difference.

Think you need a different top to cover that bearing. If you look at the picture below you will see that bearing is actually situated inside a cup. So I suspect that the headset you have fitted there is mismatched.

You need a cover that actually goes "over" that bearing to almost down to the frame. Similar to this one below.... If that makes sense.

It did come with a cup, but has a 'built in cup' in the frame, so the cup wasn't necessary - but now the depth is not the same.

Thanks for the feedback guys - I have contacted the bike shop and they may have an alternative for me :D

I was looking at having the cup that it came with machined to 6mm and then using it as it is - would have been my backyard mechanic make-do.

Can't you remove the current cup and replace it with the cup that came with the headset?

As others have said you need a different headset cap

Crane creek also make them, where the bearing is half in the frame and half in the headset top cap

buycycle is currently out of stock, but am sure you can get elsewhere http://www.buycycle.co.za/components/mtb-en/headsets-en/cane-creek-en-2-3/cane-creek-40-series-zerostack-1-1-8-headset-is41-28.6-short-cover.html

You have to remember that headset parts are not really interchangeable.

For instance, the compression ring and the top cap HAS to be a match! as different compression rings recess differently into heir respective matched top cap.

My advice, buy a matching headset upper assembly (top cap, compression ring and bearing) and that will give you the intended fit.

Cane Creek ones are value for money and you can buy these parts of the headset separately.

Hope you come right soon

It is a semi-integrated headset - the 'cup' is part of the frame. Gotta love alu frames eh :/

Nope its integrated . If it had cups it would have been semi integrated. The FSA headset you tried to use was for semi integrated as it came with cups for the bearings to run in. See the two pics below. One comes with cups and the other not. Soon as the "cups" are part of the frame its integrated.
