Tiny K Posted April 15, 2014 Share I am busy with a road bike build for a friend and finally found a headset that fits the bike... but it stands about 6mm higher than the top of the head tube. The recess for the bearing is not deep enough for the setup to drop further so now has this gap. Any suggestions? I am considering having the casing, in which it came, cut to 6mm to create a spacer to take up the difference.
Ysterperd Posted April 15, 2014 Share If you cant recess the cup any deeper, have you tried sourcing a thinner/smaller top bearing? Tiny K

BogusOne Posted April 15, 2014 Share Think you need a different top to cover that bearing. If you look at the picture below you will see that bearing is actually situated inside a cup. So I suspect that the headset you have fitted there is mismatched. http://cdn.probikeshop.fr/images/products2/17/83920/83920-fsa-jeu-de-direction-orbit-aa-5-zs-n-57-aa-conique-re-ducteur.JPG You need a cover that actually goes "over" that bearing to almost down to the frame. Similar to this one below.... If that makes sense. http://bmxultra.com/archive/reviews/pictures/speedline/speedline_integrated_headset.jpg Tiny K

Tiny K Posted April 15, 2014 Share Thanks for the feedback guys - I have contacted the bike shop and they may have an alternative for me I was looking at having the cup that it came with machined to 6mm and then using it as it is - would have been my backyard mechanic make-do. Can't you remove the current cup and replace it with the cup that came with the headset?
Dirtbreath Posted April 16, 2014 Share If you don't come right speak to the guys at intltrade.co.za They are the agents for FSA who make a large range of adapters. Tiny K
shaper Posted April 16, 2014 Share As others have said you need a different headset cap Crane creek also make them, where the bearing is half in the frame and half in the headset top cap http://www.buycycle.co.za/images/thumbnails/280/280/detailed/7/CC_0004s_0017_BAA0081K.jpgbuycycle is currently out of stock, but am sure you can get elsewhere http://www.buycycle.co.za/components/mtb-en/headsets-en/cane-creek-en-2-3/cane-creek-40-series-zerostack-1-1-8-headset-is41-28.6-short-cover.html Tiny K
NINER_boy Posted April 16, 2014 Share You have to remember that headset parts are not really interchangeable. For instance, the compression ring and the top cap HAS to be a match! as different compression rings recess differently into heir respective matched top cap. My advice, buy a matching headset upper assembly (top cap, compression ring and bearing) and that will give you the intended fit. Cane Creek ones are value for money and you can buy these parts of the headset separately. Hope you come right soon Tiny K
Tiny K Posted April 16, 2014 Share Can't you remove the current cup and replace it with the cup that came with the headset? It is a semi-integrated headset - the 'cup' is part of the frame. Gotta love alu frames eh :/
BogusOne Posted April 16, 2014 Share It is a semi-integrated headset - the 'cup' is part of the frame. Gotta love alu frames eh :/ Nope its integrated . If it had cups it would have been semi integrated. The FSA headset you tried to use was for semi integrated as it came with cups for the bearings to run in. See the two pics below. One comes with cups and the other not. Soon as the "cups" are part of the frame its integrated.
