Anyone know where I could get a set of seals in Cape Town?

Tried Bridge cycles and they contacted their supplier who no longer has any.

I haven't stripped them yet but I wanted to change the break fluid due to some very high temperatures on some recent long steep downhill's where I smelt some horrible things going on in the breaks.

If there are no longer seals available, can one strip, clean and refit or will the seals not hold any longer?

Break system 3 years old now

You can strip, inspect, clean and refit - you will quickly notice a leak if they don't work - if the seals are cooked till they are hard and brittle you will need new ones - if they are still soft and pliable, they are probably good.

Apply some red rubber grease to o-rings

VERY thinly.... and only if you must for assembly - stuff is not very heat resistant at all - it's better to use whatever your brake system uses - so brake fluid for SRAM and mineral oil for Shimano (mostly)

Once it is assembled, then you MUST clean all the lubricants from the outside of the caliper/piston assembly - clean... surgical wipes are good for this - if expensive. Clean lint free cloth with surgical spirits works too - just use latex gloves to protect your hands, or you might have issues with split cuticles.

I was looking for seals for XX brakes (lever & caliper), i called CWC and they came thru cheaper than JHB stores even tho the item isn't listed on their website, give them a shout?

They also got it cheaper than quoted and i was called, i got other goods for the cash i'd already paid, happiness :D

So you can rebuild the XX levers calipers, that's interesting?

So Shimano current range of brakes you chuck out and replace lever or caliper when a seal goes but SRAM/Avid you can rebuild right up to XX on the current range? Didn't know that!

I had the same brakes and had problems with the seals too. Careful with Avids they can be problematic if you mess around with them and don't have the right parts, oils, etc. There are agents who service Avid brakes in Cape Town and Pretoria. The Avid agents are Cape Cycle Systems, rather just call them and get it sorted out properly. 021 761 3528.
