Can I ask the obvious stupid question as to why not?

Hahaha gums its a alloy/steel pipe cutter for a reason.... but guess some have tried

I have seen a few people try and do it.

It crushes the carbon and you end up with a frayed mess

SUre it could maybe be done if you super gentle and carefull.. and not plumber style...

Dremel your best friend for carbon i rekon...... but still boils down to who's behind the tool..

Seen some okes *&$**&&* **** up with just a dremel :w00t:

Most mess-ups seem to be guys cutting mtb bars. For some reason they are cut with anything from 18t hacksaw blade to a angle grinder.

Yes a pipe cutter would have been a good idea but alas. Also unfortunately the amazing work bench is my father in law's and is a bit short on bike tools. The stem idea is a good one. I'll do that if I ever convince my significant other to agree to me building another bike (she didn't really agree to this one to begin with I just brought the frame home like a puppy and said can I keep it).

I've kind of decided I'm going the custom build route with my wheels. I'm not as rich as I'd like so it looks like XT hubs. Considering Dartmoor rocket rims http://dialdbikes.co.za/dartmoor-rocket-enduro-am-rim.html anyone know anything about them. I've looked at Stans Arch Ex but they are twice the price and I'm nervous that they may be weaker due to being so light. As I've never built a wheel before I'm wondering is 500 grams really that bad for a rim? For the record I'm going to run 2.2s front and back for the time being. Mountain king front, X king rear (they're already in the garage) so the 21mm inner width of these is perfect and will allow me to go a little wider if I decide to.

Wow this thread is seeing lots of activity. Didn't realise there would be so much interest in my little project.

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission :whistling:

In terms of hubs look at something other than the XT hubs unless you are comfortable with servicing hubs. Old style cup and cone technology.

They are great hubs but maintenance is plenty on them.

I've searched around. But I just can't bring myself to pay for hope as much as I'm sure they're amazing. Maybe I'll still convince myself. Have been looking at the Dartmoor stuff for instance this http://dialdbikes.co.za/dartmoor-vee-one-rear-hub.html since the prices are good. And on paper they seem good but the have no rep to go on. Also they seem to be having stock problems. There's also rapide but they also don't have stock and they seem a bit more xc geared, xc makes me nervous sometimes since it seems to sometimes be code for "we've carved away all the strength on this hub so don't drop off a curb or you might crack something". Are hopes the only option when it comes to cartridge bearing hubs?
