Hi everyone.

I need advice Please.

I and my family want to take up mountain biking as a casual weekend ride on some of the MTB trails around Centurion.

After hours of research on the internet and with my limited knowledge on components etc.., four bikes seems to be good for a starter.

The models I am interested in is as follow:

- GT Karakoram 3.0 29er

- Ghost 2920

- Merida TFS 300 big nine

- Titan Comp 29er

If anyone can maybe assist me by looking at the specs and components, Please let me know what will be the best from the 4 noted bikes for a beginner who want the first bike to at least last a while before the need to upgrade arises..

My first MTB was the Merida TFS300 26"er, and to be honest, I'm not sure I would have upgraded after 8,000km if it wasn't for the wheel size, this bike has my first Xterra Triathlon on it, my first Magalies Monster, two 94.7 road rides, two 94.7 MTB Challenges, Walkerville, more than a few Van Gaalens, loads of Breedsnek climbs (both sides) and many other great rides on it.

I could be biased purely based on my love affair with MTB being forged on my Merida, but hey, I punished this bike and she kept on giving...

For me, the Big Nine is the way to go, if you maintain it properly, this bike will take you very very far...

Hi Jigghead

Thank you for the reply. The Merida is the favorite for me as well, but as I am new to the sport, opinions from experienced riders like you makes a person like me feel better after the money is spend..

Thanks again.

Do yourself a favor and go past the cycle lab megastore in fourways. Those guys are very helpful. They cater for people new to the sport right up to professional bikes.

I have been there about 7 times now and have received good service every time.

I was there today drooling over some of those bikes.

Sjoe tough ask.

All those bikes are good.

There's a lighty I ride with, he's 22 Ok... But he rides that GT like he stole it 10 minutes ago. Cracking scooter.

And that Merida, is shweet too.

My advise, if you like this riding hullabaloo, then prepare yourself for multiple scooters.

I'm buying second now.

What about Silverback or Momsen? I find Silverback very good value for money (but had a hard time deciding between Silverback and GT when I bought my first bike 2 years ago). And I like Momsen because local is lekker (local design but manufactured in the east somewhere like all other bikes)!

Most important thing is that you like the bike, you will not go wrong with any of the major brands mentioned.

Will be a very good idea to visit the Fourways Cycle Lab, they have a huge selection of bikes (different brands and budgets), I took a friend there a couple of weeks ago, got to compare some specs of the different brands in the same price range and he walked out with his first bike.

Check out the Silverback Sola. My friend has just bought one and he loves it. It has very good components when compared to other brands. The Sola has replaced the Vida model which was also a very good bike.

HI Georg

We actually have the Merida Big 9 300 on special at the moment for R8,999 at Cyclelab Megastore Fourways. It is a great bike and we have received strong feedback from customers who have purchased them.
