Problem is; cycling has been and still is growing rapidly so the marketplace is a mess… for the consumer anyway. LBS’ now only worry about customers that drop R100k on a bike, there’s so many “average customers” in the market that they don’t have to care about you or give you decent service, because there is enough volume in the market that the loss of one or a couple won’t make a difference. They’ll make the volume that they lose up in new consumers entering the market.

I’m still hoping that in the long run their reputation will bite them, but in the short term they just won’t care, because they don’t have to.

Had my bike at a LBS recently for a service and left there kinda cheesed off.

Booked my bike in the previous day for a service and couple of adjustments....get there the next day....and nothings been done. So i wait there....for a couple of hours... while i watch the owner working on a couple other bikes first...so i dont bother too much....then he pulls in his own personal bike in and starts servicing it. at this point im quite irritated but keep my cool.

So firstly...i was a paying customer...so he wasnt doing me any favours. secondly, i took the bike there the previous day already.

I really want to support the smaller establishments....but this okes priorities was way off!

I dont think im being petty when i expect the same kind of service from a big or small establishment.

He should maybe service his own while no one is watching.... :whistling:

Seeing you are in Brackenfell.....I really hope this is not a certain shop across Cape Gate...?

Not far when a lot of them seem to be doing their best to destroy it. I walk into a certain big cycle shop chain(yes that one, won't say which branch, but not the closest to me) yesterday as they are the only place open on a Sunday.

I require a starnut. Fairly common as oh, 99.95% or so of bikes use said item(correct me if I'm crazy), ask, get blank stares, no they don't have any.....ok, have any topcap sets with them in? Nope? Are you sure they're pretty common. Why no I wouldn't like to scratch in the takeoff and odds and ends box. Very nice of you to offer but pretty sure any starnut in there won't work so well.

Maybe it's just my luck never being close to my local shop when I need stuff but yeah.

Sounds like the same ace I phoned.

I asked for DT Swiss spokes of a certain length. Got told they have.

Get there and look at the spoke, but they have a W on them. So I say that they are not DT.

The the guy says to me, that is what we use on all the wheels. Shimano spokes??????

Cool - establishing a good relationship with GC so happy to hear it's not them.

I have learned that lesson already, so I decided never to pay anyone to turn bolts. Learn how to do it Yourself. It's simple and needs very few tools.

I can do the basic clean lube, and all the necessary stripping and assembling. But its the derailleur adjustments, brake adjustments, spoke tensioning etc that I'd rather not touch. I've tried...and failed horribly! lol

But the more I fiddle, the better i get...

They say, try to fix it yourself. If you dont get it right take it to the LBS, you would`ve in anycase. Edited by Smurfy

They don't do spoke adjustment in a service anyway.

Youtube the derailleur adjustment and anything else you want to do to your bike and just do....
