TREK 470, just bought to resell to save for spares for my antique bikes.

hello, i bought this TREK 470 yesterday with the idea of reselling. i have started collecting antique bikes but they cost a lot to get spares. One of my latest is a Rudge from England that is from 1956. So by shopping around i sometimes think i might stumble across something that has more potential value than it has by sitting in a store room or garage or auction floor. But the question is is my eye right, im hoping to get a general idea of valuable products and icons so i can buy then resell. there is too much to learn at this age plus running around hunting sourcing going to markets auctions etc takes up time... SO PLEASE CAN I ASK YOUR OPINIONS AND CAN YOU HELP ME... so firstly, the Trek 470. What is it worth and are there people who would buy one in South Africa. How will i work out the age and then what classification does it go into..eg light weight racer, middle school, old school, classic. DO YOU EVEN USE "SCHOOL" TERMINOLOGY FOR ROAD BIKES or should i keep that for my BMXs i sell. is this the right place to ask these questions, if not please tell me where to go. I also have a Torelli road bike and a mongoose bmx frame and araya rims. I KNOW THIS SAYS RANT AND RAVE BUT I DID NOT SEE A TOPIC TITLE ABOUT ASKING QUESTIONS, this is all new to meie forums, please guide me, COOL, I LOOK FORWARD TO A RESPONSE. really need help with the Torelli. Thankyoupost-61970-0-95151300-1405701957_thumb.jpgpost-61970-0-65995900-1405701955_thumb.jpgpost-61970-0-34263700-1405701953_thumb.jpgpost-61970-0-82599300-1405701950_thumb.jpgpost-61970-0-39618300-1405701945_thumb.jpgpost-61970-0-09483800-1405701948_thumb.jpgpost-61970-0-71902900-1405701942_thumb.jpgpost-61970-0-37827400-1405701940_thumb.jpgpost-61970-0-80438500-1405701937_thumb.jpg

thanks, ive seen that. the price in dollars for this bike is hectic. do americans buy here, sorry i sound silly, but like i said its new. DAMN, how do you understand e-bay. does one need a course, i found it complicated, but maybe i was not applying myself. a while ago i wanted to sell a Chopper on e-bay, i got stuck on the parcel size and value bit... TOO MUCH. but if thats a channel then i must get on it. in your opinion is e-bay easy to use. in the condition it is could i make my 2500 back. is this the right forum to post this kind of question. is it pushing it if i post the torelli aswell. Do you know current bmx forums, seems alot out there but old and not as chatty and responsive as this site. but i dont see any bmx on this site, its mentioned in titles but theres nothing there when i go there. Thanks

Move to Capetown if you are not there already, those lonely hipsters will sell their souls for a nice smacked up old road bike!

But jokes aside, the problem with eBay is the size of the Atlantic between them and us.

No ways in hell you will sell a bike worth a few thousand rand overseas, the shipping is to expensive, the very old and collectible ones worth R10-20K or more perhaps but you will need to pay a truckload to have them securely delivered so eBay doesn't find you in contempt and take away all your money if it gets lost in transit.

eBay is a minefield from hell if you sell things, do a lot of research, as you don't want to get on the wrong side of eBay/Paypal as a seller because that is a fight you unequivocally will lose. You could rather break up the bikes and sell the smaller sized spares on eBay, even the frames if they are worth it, shipping again will be the deciding factor.

That trek is a really good looker, if you want to make money selling them locally you will need to learn how to polish the sh1te out/off of them. The local market for these old racers etc is definitely growing.

I can't edit the post above.

Was advising you to post your questions on the retro bicycle thread.

The guys are free with advice and interest.

There's a retro bicycle thread

http://www.thehubsa....bicycle-thread/

collectors, buyers etc visit the thread often, post their projects and sometimes there for sale bikes.

That said, do you want to sell the Torelli?

If you do, pm me.

hello yes im willing to sell the Torelli aswell, make a fair offer please im learning still, but i bought it realising it had some potential. im actually putting together antique bikes i can rent out as props to the movie industry and need to fund this.. but i hope i dont shoot myself in the foot and pay for something thats not worth anything but i believe i have a eye for something of potential value, even if i only make like R500 on the purchase price, its 500 more than i had... but with the bmxs i score, even the old choppers. i got a 1956 Rudge the other day but that needs work and antique parts from England. so that baby will have to wait till ive saved up. if you want i will send you even more detailed shots of Torelli and detailed notes, i always want to be honest and transparent. There is nothing wrong structurally with bike but paint work in some places needs attention. The guys on the overseas forums also reckon its a cool bike. cool, get back to me. Is R4000 a fair price?

I have a TREK 470 on my indoor trainer. Its a Chrome Molley frame. I recently changed it to a 1 X 8 speed with only rear brakes and strait handlebars with an 8spd MTB shifter. Awsome commuter bike and very comfortable.

Bradley

Trek's began to take off in this country in the late 80's after the introduction of the 1200 series Trek road bike. It was an aluminium frame with Shimano group set and Mavic wheels if I recall. Probably around the same time Cannondale became popular, just before MTB.

The 470 was earlier model and not very popular. R2,500 is probably a bit steep to have paid for it if you want to sell at a profit. Clean it up and advertise and see what offers you get.

I too would like to see more pics of the Torelli. The Atlanta 96 wheel was enough to get me interested.
