TREK 470, just bought to resell to save for spares for my antique bikes.

Trek's began to take off in this country in the late 80's after the introduction of the 1200 series Trek road bike. It was an aluminium frame with Shimano group set and Mavic wheels if I recall. Probably around the same time Cannondale became popular, just before MTB.

The 470 was earlier model and not very popular. R2,500 is probably a bit steep to have paid for it if you want to sell at a profit. Clean it up and advertise and see what offers you get.

I too would like to see more pics of the Torelli. The Atlanta 96 wheel was enough to get me interested.

thanks, how do you polish with out damaging, what do you use. can you polish the cast components, the aluminium and alloys. sometimes i dont have time to polish because money needs to come in quick because ive always got money laid out and sometimes i buy a white elephant or a keeper. got something from 1956 here some east german bikes and a western flyer the guys on the american forums reckon is a seventies thing, i bought that just because of the cool retro headlamp. im hoping to restore these bikes to use as movie props one day. i am learning still, sold couple of bmx as well and a chopper in perfect perfect condition, it was 30yrs or more old.. but i got a bit robbed on that one. wish i knew about forums before i sold that bike. but some of these bikes make me sad when they leave because i would dig to just monut them as pieces of art... i just dig the look of that TREK... regards the TORELLI send me a mail to spin@hotmail so i can send pics. i went to my workshop today to take extra shots. i think i will have to let the TREK go at cost then, we are buying 20 bikes in next few days to resell, but they standard mass produced second hand things we make minimal on but they fly out... if theres time or money i will keep the TREK and spen more time on it. LOOK THE TORELLI IS DUSTY AND THIS MORNING I WAS RUBBING IT A BIT AND STILL THOUGHT I SHOULD CLEAN IT UP... BUT then it might be cheating? because it still is what it is.. i kinda feel more truthful for people to see it as it is. cool, get back to me with email adress. brad out.

Hi Brad

I sent you my email address in a PM.

There is an art to cleaning old bicycles and you can get some further info here ...... http://www.classicrendezvous.com/Restoration/Restoration_main.htm or elsewhere on the web. The late Sheldon Brown had some good advise.

Care! Often people do more harm to parts/bikes by trying to "fix"them and many of us prefer to get bikes in their scruffy state as we enjoy spending time and effort restoring. Not to mention money spent. The older the bike and its rarity is often an indication of how expensive it will be to restore.

I personally don't buy restored bikes but prefer getting an old clonker which I can then do work on.

Is there anyway you could possibly use full stops, paragraphs, capitals at the beginning of sentences, not using all upper cases in same places Etc? Would make reading your posts a lot easier ;)

Even if something is old if you don't at least give it a good wash down and run over with polish you are not going to get top prices. Think of a hipster store with a few classic bikes on the floor for sale, would they look dirty/metal tarnished/tatty like they just been pulled out of a dusty barn or old but clean and a nice sheen all over after of being cleaned up?

Obviously if it's a historic relic then cleaning it up may do more harm than good so just use common sense.

Get Wynns 59sec mag cleaner R45 for degreasing , microfiber cloths R30 for 3, auto sol metal polish R45 and meguairs gold class polish R150(there is also a slightly more aggressive meguairs polish that is useful to also have) all from Midas. All top notch stuff that will do the job properly/amazing shine and last you months if not a year or 2, don't buy cheap polish, it's not worth it and polishing a bike you use such a small amount you might as well get decent stuff because a bottle will last for ages.

I have a few bikes, and my favourite is my Trek 460 Fast Track Cromoly. It's the only one of my bikes that I use on my IDT because the frame can handle the stresses in indoor training, unlike alu, and I wouldn't use my carbon racer on my iDT. I've replaced the original parts and had the frame repainted to its original colour so it looks new, but it's value to me does not lie in its antiquity or resale value, unlike with you.

Brad, good luck with your business, but as per other comments, do something about your grammar and punctuation, and you will come across as more professional and credible.

Hi Brad

I just picked up a Cosmos frame this evening. I bought it for the spares. What I can tell you is it was made in good old SA and I must admit a closer inspection has revealed it was well made, is pretty light and the paint work still looks good.

I am now keen to find out a bit more about the origin. May have to create a separate thread for this.

I have a feeling Cosmos was made in Babalegi along with the Le Turbos and Alpinas. Living in Krugersdorp in the 80's I used to hang out at Cajees alot, back when they were an awesome friendly bunch to deal with. I remember one of the guys saying he visited the Cosmos factory in Bop, and had a Cosmos frame custom painted with his name on it.

Brad did you get your stuff from Midas, how's it going?

Yes thank You. I tested it all out on some standard fodder we sell at boot markets and on line, the other bikes are locked in my workshop which i do not get to everyday. I can not believe what i saw... I cant wait to get my hands on those bikes. Even if I have to part them out. Its incredible, the change was magic. basically I got my worker to wash and do general clean then i showed what to use and where. I went out and on my return I immediatley was not happy, i scolded him for not polishing correctly BECAUSE I EXPECTED THAT STUFF TO TRANSFORM THE BIKE. He gave me the he did his best story.... UNTIL I got started on the polishing, dude, the scratches and marks we disappearing in front of our eyes. Menzi could not believe it.

With out sounding ridiculous I actually got excited at the results and the potential it could offer so i took the bike in the house and while my girlfriend and i were watching our favourite series on dvd I spent polishing things. now just to get those other bikes here. Problem is theft, we got alarms and dogs, security gates and burglar bars but theres a few addicts running around our neighbourhood, our immediate neighbours son is a hectic addict and i think he stole a cheapie I left in the garden once. Now we trying to get a little place closer to home but its really thief proof. Thanks, as soon as im polished and clean I WILL BE BACK.

Ive alredy had interest in the Cosmos but I no show until clean. Just now to find some real gems. Also going to have to start stripping. now thats Something im scared of, must i use velvet cased tools... lol. But when i want to buy something from someone it is usually not clean BUT I need to send it out there to see if its worth buying to resell. So I think before I put it for the world to see I will, If you dont mind, send to you and a few other generous guys who are willing to help. Because the original image of the dirty bike might just corrupt the next approach. Speculating on these things is tricky, especially when you end up with these relative cheapies. Regards my first pirchases the saving grace might be parting out.

Thanks, Brad...

Damn man, this place will make me a literary master with all the requests for grammar and the likes... WOW, you must see my personal mails even... paragraphs, capitals etc. COOL, thanks for the advice.

But to tell the truth some of it is the computers fault for not capitalising the first letter of a new sentence after a full stop.

Okay, now I understand the logic of a thread. When I asked the other day is when trouble started. You see I was given the thread link but when I went to the forum titles I could not find it. So i was thinking how does this exsist, is it a page somewhere else that is just linked then i thought how do you create a thing called a thread. Cool, I know now. i might of seen one born right before my eyes... right here... COOL HEY!!
