So I recently purchased a set of road shoes, as I was using MTB shoes, but they have seen better days. I changed the pedals etc and my first ride was about 90km with no problems at all. Three days later I want for a 40km ride and had some serious knee pain on my left leg.

I understand that there may be differences and I will have to keep adjusting till I find what works best. My question is, how much does Road shoe/cleat setup differ to that of MTB shoes/cleat.

I used to set up my road and mtb shoes using the same method using the ball of my foot (the bulge on the inside of the foot behind the big toe) as a reference point.

Make a mark on each shoe where the centre of the ball of your foot is and then adjust the cleat so that this mark is where you like it (normaly slightly Foreward of the centre of the pedal axle when viewed from above, depending on your foot size...bigger = more).

Now i use the same pedals (Time atac) and mtb shoes on all my bikes (road, tri and mtb)...much more simplier and no worries about different set up issues.

What type of cleats?

Try use cleats that allow a few degrees of left and right float and that your foot is in its natural position along the heel / toe line.

i.e. you may have set up the cleat to be parrallel to your bikes centre line and in reality your foot might want to be slighty toe in or out. Cleats with float help your foot to go to its natural position without creating extra tension on your knee.

Im using the shimano with float. This is what confused me as the first ride was great with no pain at all.
