Hi Guys,

I need some advice from the Cape Town commuters. I am looking for the safest route from Sunset Beach to Rondebosch common. Avoiding the M5. Doing the Freedom ride tomorrow and would prefer to cycle to the start and then home.

cycle path all the way to woodstock, lower main road through salt river and past black river park.

not sure if its the safest but avoids the m5

Thanks, How does the cycle path get to Woodstock? That's my confusion point. It goes undar the N1 then runs parallel to N1 into town with the railway tracks on the left.

as u ride parallel to the n1 u'll see the church street bridge, u must turn up the ramp coming down on the right hand side of the road.

old biscuit mill gets busy on a Saturday morning so be alert going through there

Wouldn't it be easier to cross the bridge that takes you to the M5 but go through maitland instead? Then from berkley road, up to and past Vincent Pallotti, then the ramp up to the common?

Sorry I dont have a better way to explain this route

Not sure if it is legal or safe to cycle over the bridge. Technically it forms part of the N1 I think

+1 - follow cycle path through Paarden Eiland under N1, you then go over the bridge parallel to the railway line and you will see Lower main rd bridge in front of you. Go under the bridge and turn right up the pedestrian walkway in the middle of the 2 bus lanes. Turn right at the top and head down to Albert Str. Turn left into Albert, wave to Avron  and go past Biscuit Mill, be careful of traffic and stupidity. At Salt River circle take 2nd exit which is still Albert, it becomes Malta which becomes Liesbeek Parkway. Carry on under N2 and turn left into Klipfontein Rd Mowbray which will take you to NW corner of common.

Also. Just be aware going through Paarden Island. It can get a bit dodgy on the cycle path around the back. Best to ride with someone. There have been some bike-jackings there in the past.

My regular Sunday cycle is through there, as soon as I get to section street the "liquid bullet" is in my hand. Stays there until the bottom of the railway line bridge!!!
