Yes there are devices as mentioned I have a 60g one available with battery that lasts for in excess of 2 weeks in a sleep mode and will wake up with movement. It just does not lend to hiding in or on a bike very well in its current casing. I am trying to get an idea of what people want or don't want and then I can get some info and determine whether the cost could be justified or it would be just plain ridiculous. float fox the idea is also to help when someone may be in trouble not only stolen or jacked bike. As much as I want the comments, I am looking to get positive criticism or ideas so if you foresee a problem tell me what it is. 500 units will not cut it but 2000 may just be enough. No one has answered my questions yet only really giving their opinion, which is fine but I want more info on what people want. What would make you use one?

Fair enough but people are under the misconception that if you have a device it will always work as intended. Even expensive vehicles are recalled for errors in design or manufacture. So it's about the right quality product to start with and then still expect a small percentage of quality control issues. A cheap unit with a poor quality chipset will have a high chance of failure. A badly installed unit will in all probability fail. An educated criminal targeting a particular product will find a way around most problems but that is few and far between, whereas an opportunist looking to do some previously/currently disadvantaged shopping, which we all seem to encounter, could be traced with a higher possibility of the return of such stolen property. BTW - disclaimer and added to OP, I am not from a tracking company, I do however supply hardware to them and have been thinking long and hard on how to help our cycling community.

What if the device saved on your insurance cost? Same as most basic vehicle tracking devices, as in, fit a device and pay less on your premium.

These are items that add to the cost of a unit whether you pay monthly or once off, the development is expensive and to have armed response comes at a price. It is certainly something to look at and will be taken into consideration when putting a needs assessment together, however chances are you will take your phone with anyway, so this product should then be simple and inexpensive which would make it more worthwhile. Otherwise you would have to make it do everything that your Garmin's and other GPS devices do including Strava and the cost would be a hell of a lot more which seems to be a problem for people. Its funny how we spend R8k on a cellphone but skimp on a helmet.

good question, I am not sure but will find out soon enough. How would you see it working for you? What alternatives are there other than a once off purchase, the unit is one thing but the software is where you see the info.There are ways and means but I want to get a feel of what people are comfortable with, then maybe there is a structure that will work.

Thanks for the reply and info, I have spoken to a few people and there does seem to be willing people but interest is key. . The device itself is good quality and is used in large numbers around the world already, I would request a specifically designed casing which would require big numbers.

In a metal frame would create a problem hence the question on mounting. Settings can allow the report time to be extended and a deep sleep mode but when movement is detected it will wake up and report a time and/or distance Sun tech is extremely expensive but agreed would be good.

The fall alert was designed for the elderly who had a fall and may have needed assistance, it can be incorporated into a unit with the correct settings.

Hey Hubbers So I read recently there were a large number of people who would be interested in tracking their bike if the right device was available. With the cost if bikes and the safety issues we face is there a growing interest or is it a select few? Some of the challenges are as follows: The battery would need to be charged and be able to last for a week or more, this adds weight but technology is improving. The onus is on you to make sure it is always charged even with a sleep mode whereby the unit wakes up with movement. The weight and design of the unit. At this stage you would not need to use it in on race day other than going to and from as the risks are extremely low, but for training and other normal/solo rides the extra weight could detract from the money already spent on losing weight. The cost of the unit and a fee to track on a monthly basis, as any tracking system needs maintenance and server space. New housings and development of these units are expensive, if they are of a decent quality. Mounting or attachment to the bike which will allow the unit to keep a gps/gsm signal and not allow it to be ripped off and tossed aside. (camouflage or hiding it as such) There are some features that can be added, such as a panic button however this depends on how and where the unit is mounted. A fall alert can be generated, but we may fall too often for this to be practical and we could land up with a cry wolf scenario, whereby it is ignored by the receiver or perceived to be a false alarm. Would you like to be able to track your bike? What would you be prepared to pay monthly? How much extra weight would you be prepared to carry? Would you like a panic button feature? Is a fall alert practical in terms of notifying someone by sms should it happen? Currently I have a model which is 60g, has a SOS/alarm button, IPX5 compliant and Geo fencing among other things. Let's hear some of your thoughts and see if there is potential to support such a device. All great ideas but this is where it needs to start. All driving schools need proper control, your last trainer in the art of driving and they do not bother with courtesy or rules, they teach you how to pass a test.

I have a thought process which may need some tinkering. I had an experience which sparked a letter to the Minister if Safety and Security, after a few mails back and forth he eventually answered my first mail, I could post it in a separate place if there is interest. Anyway it seems the issue is about policing and the law, what if we offered our services to the traffic authorities? They are looking at a reservist type structure and the amount of stupidity I see, on the road daily, is frightening. If I could help police in some way and know that something will be done about it, I am willing to give up time to help and make sure people see that they cannot get away with breaking the rules. How many of you would give up an hour or two or three a week to do this and how could we offer our services? Sit at an intersection for an hour recording transgressions on camera and then this could be passed on to the traffic and they deal with it accordingly, taking the law into account. Hey Guys and Gals So after a few years of coastal holidays and the start of my MTB riding on the Knysna trails last year, we will be doing things differently this year. We will be heading to JHB for about 12 days over the festive season. This is a considerable amount of time away from my local trails and riding, not the best option but we will make the most of it either way. So the question is do I bother taking the bikes? Now before you say well duh why not, here is some further info: · We have a vehicle which can be used but I would not want to dirty or damage it, can probably make a plan with blankets etc as the backseat folds. · We do not have travel bags or boxes for the flight so would need to rent, if it can work to drop in JHB then pick up again to travel back to CPT to save paying for the full time away. · We have two young kids coming with and travelling with them is difficult enough in terms of space so gonna be tough with bikes · The wife rides but is still getting into it. She rides a few times a month where I ride a few times a week · She has done Tokai once and Majik Forest a few times, I enjoy the trails and like a good downhill single track thrown in which I ride slower with her. · We are both very weary of JHB/Gauteng after a driveway hold up/hijacking about 2 years back, never really got over it. · Staying in Craighall across from The Spruit so I suppose that would be default option and maybe elsewhere depending on time, distance and fun factor. Not sure what other info would make a difference or help with some good advice. Is it safe to ride alone or with the wife? Is there a fun factor at The Spruit or is it mostly flat single/ jeep track combos, where endurance will be the winner? What distance options are there or where would I find a good map of the area to try and plot some routes? Cheers Lee

Big difference between WANTING and MEANS. I wanted it but even with the entry and hotel offer I would not have been able to take it, unfortunately. But I do think for those wanting to ride a race, and not being able to because someone else bought an entry to make a profit, is not ideal. Supply and Demand except in this case demand to pay the original price plus sub cost.

It seems that these guys were very lucky. The driver apparently was driving 140km/h in an 80 zone to get away and it took about 30 minutes to get close enough to get the number plate, reports from Stellies cops or friends thereof, that they are on it. Hope they catch him so that Ray and him can hold each others hand while baba takes them for a test :ride"

I was there, We should have had them on our side for a few minutes before their start. They were quite loud and we thought the cops were there for us. Want to see some details of this ass.
