My fiancée's daughter has a 7 spd sram gripshift gear setup on her 20" bicycle. She cannot change gears at all. I read international forums and have seen similar issues with kids struggling . Are 7 spd trigger shifters available locally?

Yes. Shimano Tourny but you may have to change the rear derailleur as well. The stuff is quite cheap though.

We have Sram 7sp gripshift sets available at R235 fot the set.

I think gripshift is easier for little ones to work because they can use the whole hand and wrist to apply force. With triggers only the thumb is used on the upshift and that takes too much force for little ones. Perhaps the gripshift just needs a good cleaning and lube or new housing and cable to get it slicker?

I changed my daughters 7 speed grip to a trigger, on a 20" avalanche. Cost R50 at Complete cyclist, it is a Shimano unit, trigger to go up button to go down.
