Fixie Hub

Busy on my first restoration/fixie build and have a question regarding the rear hub.

So on the wheelset is a screw on hub which I read that it may be a little dangerous as if that rear cog comes lose I may run into a problem...

So I want to buy a new hub and rebuild the wheel.

The thing is I trying not to break the bank on this build..

What hub do I need and where might I get one locally?

Fixie hub or freehub? the screw on single speed freehubs are cheap and don't come undone easily - when you pedal they get tighter..... http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/shimano-single-speed-freewheel/rp-prod7805

Fixie...

Was reading that if I put one of these on I have a chance of when locking the pedals for breaking it may slip and then I kind of have no breaks.

Or are they trustworthy?

That one has a freehub, so you MUST have brakes on your bike - for urban riding on a fixie, it is my opinion that you should have brakes on your bike - for emergency use - even if you don't normally use them. I am not a fan of fixies for commuting type duties - especially if you don't have a Loooong history of tiding a fixie.

Quality fixie setups are ultra reliable - properly installed they don't slip or break - but they are hard to ride in traffic. (or I think so anyway)

It's going to be my first fixie, so it's a big learning curve. Don't plan on playing in traffic, just ride around the neighbourhood and start getting my confidence up, so probably a front break will go on in the start.

So what Hub would you suggest? Looking at the flip flop hubs which are ideal but to source locally at a good price may be difficult.

Your hub should have a lock ring that screws on after the freewheel... without it your hub is useless

The hub has no freewheel.

So if I was to buy a new hub for a fixie build what hub would I need to buy?

And can I source one of these locally at a reasonable price?

I think he's actually referring to the singlespeed cog that can be threaded on.

What is reasonable?

Speak to Emile at Hunter cycles in Braamfontein

I see this place is the place to go and they do beautiful work. I was just concerned they may be out of my price range but will give them a look see

They do have higher end stuff but also cheaper. You can tell them that you want cheap and they'll make a plan. Between Emile and Melvin they'll have you sorted. Also they do not over charge. Cheap stuff are cheap and expensive, expensive

That is good to know, will pop past them and see what they have. If they can source stuff that would be brilliant as the bike is needing still a few things (Namely a crank, BB, and pedals still).

Thanks will chat to them and see what I can find
