Steel fork for a SS

I'm not a fan of the blade look of the carbon forks I've seen. That photo of JCMeyer bending his also gave me the heebie jeebies. I quite like the reassurance of steel.

They aren't all bladed.

Dude you have to remember that is weigh 100kg and i was coming down from about 2m with all my weight on the front wheel and it still did not break.

A decent video of Carbon Vs Steel.

I have both a Steel rigid on my SS and the Carbon rigid on my niner. both are great forks and I love and rate them both.

That being said you cant beat the feel of Steel, I love my steel fork but dont think i would have survived the oopsy from sunday.

Are there any that you can recommend I have a look at?

none bladed carbon forks

Ritchey WCS is a thing of beauty but quite expensive.

I also had a Exotic Carbon rigid fork was Nice. I had the 26" fork and could run a 29er wheel in it too. Was ok but sold it once I got the Niner carbon fork.

Then there is the slightly bladed slightly rounded very very sexy Whiskey no9 Fork

My riding buddy Rouxtjie has one and I have lusted after it since installation.

That's the worst test I have ever seen, I would still go ride the steel fork after that hit with the hammer but I wouldn't go ride the carbon after that

Is this Santa Cruz test somewhat misleading? While it does show off the excellence of carbon where the frame is desinged to take force (even the final concrete block hammering). It doesn't really test the random crash scenario, where many carbon whoopsies happen. What do you think the result would have been if they hammered a chainstay on a complete bike laterally against that concrete block?

I think it is to test the forces that the bike would encounter through normal use. i.e It shouldnt fail when you are on it and riding.

I honestly don't think you'll go wrong with either a steel or a carbon fork, depending on the sort of feel you are looking for. The forks I've had:

Exotic 26" carbon - this is the generic, round carbon tube bonded to aluminium dropouts and fork crown, sold under many different names (PRO, Exotic, etc.). Lots of front to back flex under heavy braking.

Kona P2 steel 29" fork - Stock fork that came with my Kona Unit. It felt really good, but it felt like it deflected quite easily off line. That may also be due to the crappy wheel build that I had at the time.

Niner RDO carbon - Feels really well damped. Little to no deflection off obstacles and no front to back flex.

Surly Krampus  29" steel - I think a lot of the deflection that a long steel fork might experience is absorbed by that 3.0" tyre.

Disclaimer: The above is just my personal opinion as a really average rider......

What happened to your fork? I missed that
