Hi Ed-Zulu, "maritime rules change from country to country..." really? So do ships swop their name lights depending on where they are? Or does the meaning of red and green change depending on location?

No the vessel per se does not make such changes, however, if you have ever sailed from a US port and then a Russian port you will know that certain conventions change and that your statement about blanket rules have no leg to stand on.

For instance, what are maritime rules about approaching vessels passing each other in the Malaca Straits and then Durban harbour/outer anchorage...go check up on these and then my statement about following local rules/signage/convention will clear this discussion up.

Ed-Zulu is correct, hence the very elaborate documentation and notifications broadcast via Notices to Mariners and such. Nothing more dangerous than someone who "thinks" they know, best to always check first and comply with specific local rules.

Hi Ed-Zulu, DawieO

I think you are missing the point that I was trying to make, and perhaps I did not make myself clear enough.

1. I did not make a blanket statement; I specifically included the words “unless indicated differently”.

2. Publications such as ANR and Notices to Mariners are there to indicate where there are differences from the “norm”.

3. I take the “norm” as being the following as per ROR rule#9 – Narrow channels… INTERNATIONAL and INLAND states “A vessel proceeding along the course of a narrow channel or fairway shall keep as near to the outer limit of the channel or fairway which lies on her starboard side as is safe and practicable”.  If this is not the case in the Malaca Straits or wherever it will be published as such.

4. I did not say anything specific to the rules/signage in the Cradle (and did not imply that anyone go against whatever signage there are) since I have not yet cycled that route and therefore cannot comment on it.  I only answered one question which was whether there is any specific direction that is the norm.  I am careful and observant when riding a trail to follow the correct trail directions as indicated (I am also usually the first person to give way).   However, when there are NO direction indicators then I believe that one should go counter-clockwise because that seems to be the tendency with aviation; mariners; athletic tracks; etc.  There are also many other arguments and discussions about why counter-clockwise are preferred by motorcycle racers; why athletic tracks are counter-clockwise; etc.

5. I also did not imply anything contrary to what is the “rule in SA” since there is no rule that I could find.  If there is such a rule that I am not aware of, please direct me to it.

6. Lastly, I was not trying to be argumentative or "know-it-all".  I merely made the point that I initially made since I find it increasingly more dangerous with more riders on trails where there is no signage.
