MTB Route from Randburg to Voortrekker Monument via Spruit

Sounds like a great base-type ride - how safe is it from a security point of view? Were there any dodgy sections?

I consider the risk acceptable, both ways; Road users and skelms. In the spruit there are many blind corners and bushes were you could be taken by surprise. 3 Things has to be present, opportunity, victim and perpetrator. I did feel less vulnerable once I left the Spruit, as the Tar was not further than two granny gear peddling strokes away.

From Witkoppen/Main intersection there were a few foot commuters, but nothing serious. Encountered a few MTBers coming up from Lonehill way. Once over the Jukskei, I used the tar up to Helderfontein turnoff (Maybe 600m or so) There is a Pine tree plantation on the left going up, not sure if there are any routes through there. From Helderfontein turn off to the R55 intersection there is not much surprise. With boundary walls/fences on your left side and a good view ahead of you, all considered safe.

From R55 to Olifantsfontein there were some pedestrians again and no surprises. R55/Olifantsfontein intersection is busy and many distractions. More reason to be vigilant.

Olifantsfontein tot R101 forced me onto the black stuff, but was a short section

The footpaths on the left hand section of R101 is OK with some pedestrians. Once again there are boundary fences on the left to limit the "surprise" factory.

Area of caution: From Olievenhoutsbosch intersection to the bridge over the N1. There are pieces of open veld which could pose a risk.

From Hennopspark until Hennopsriver cossing there are many trails similar to the bottom part of the Spruit. I came across a few MTBers on this section. (Left hand side of the R101) Have to cross a few roads (Four in total), but no hassle. Risk factor acceptable.

From Hennopsriver crossing until Swartkops/Snake valley is OK with residential spaces to the left.

Took the Tar option from Snake valley intersection to Monument, around 2.5km

Any chance one of you logged the route on GPS?  Would like to try Albert's Farm down Spruit to Monument as a group ride with mates.  Beats a boring double Breedt's Nek any day.

If someone has a GPS route it would be a bargain, either way, I will be getting a bunch of my chinas together to try this. I think it could make for an awesome outing.

for the Centurion bit if you turn right into Olifantsfontein rd from the r55, turn left in to Rooihuiskraal rd.  On the left is single track, then a robot and 200m tar to negotiate, then more singletrack down to Uitsig rd.

At uitsig turn right keep on the right for more singletrack all the way to old JHB rd.  Turn left and keep to the left for singletrack all the way to swarkops golf course. Cross over to the right for singletrack up to snake valley rd, here you need to cross to the left for the last bit of singletrack to the monument

we ride most of those routes every day
