Depends how quickly you want the bike?

if you want it now, buy a complete bike new or from the classifieds.

If you are not in a rush and is a project build for a future date to upgrade from your current bike, you can build a better spec bike especially when bargains come up in the classifieds or CWC/Buycycle/Evobikes/Easybikes (local shops) and even CRC/Merlin/Wiggle/Evans (overseas) have flash sales/bargains/additional discounts/promotions.

Time and patience can save you a shed full of money

Well from now till March, I'll be training for the Argus so will obviously be training on my road bike. Once the Argus is done, I was gonna get into Mtb'ing. My idea was basically to buy the frame now and then look for good deals on components as they come up. My obvious concern was total costing and I didn't want to go overboard to spend on the bike.

But I've been looking around for prices and I think I can built something nice for a decent amount of money. Like someone said earlier, the price of that frame is what is enticing me. You're not gonna get a frame like that for that price again.

In the end it really comes down to making trade offs..

Do you want carbon everywhere, xtr, or is slx good enough?

Any store bought bike (looking at the cheaper side) will have a miss match with regard to components. Some will have a xt rear derailleur with a deore shifter. Or good fork with meh wheels. But if you starting out this is probably the way to go, unless (like others have said) you're patient and willing to look for specials and good 2nd hand parts.

Buying a whole bike at least lets you sell off the components you don't want, helping fund the upgrades.

Build up my Nukeproof cost me just under R19k in new componentry, but thats:

R6k Hope Enduro Wheels

R3.5k Manito DJ fork

R1.7k Nukeproof bars stem headset.

R3.7k Zee crank, Zee shifter,Zee derailleur, deore cassette, chain, hope n/w chain ring

R1.8k Saint pedals, seat, hope clamp and seatpost

R2k Elixir 5 brakes with rotors

Would probably have come to around R14k if I shopped around on the hub.

EDIT: Oh and don't forget stans and tyres, so R20k then :/
