Dax Menday Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 The SA Cycle Register has been developed to help protect SA Cyclists by providing a system where bicycle details can be uploaded, bicycles may be flagged as stolen and most importantly; 2nd hand bicycle buyers, retailers and law enforcement have the ability to query bicycle flag information based on the serial number or DataDot PIN number of the bicycle. The register also allows retailers to upload bicycle service history and verify details loaded by users. This system is user generated and free. The SA Cycle Register would appreciate any feedback on usabilty of the site as well as any thoughts on the issue of identification in the cycling industry. www.cycleregister.co.za Remember - Assets which have their identitites protected cannot be legitimately sold if they are stolen, which deters criminals from stealing protected assets. @SACycleRegister

lukes_handle Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 This sounds great, I am very interested in this. It will just need to be well supported by owners and retailers a like and it will serve it's purpose
maidenmole Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 "This page is under construction" Very interested in the idea but it's an own goal when you want feedback on the site.
HeyYou Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Like cars and cell phones ???Let's look at the positive side. Good initiative, thank you.
Amberdrake Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 I don't think ill be rushing to list my bicycle there. Its a free service with free access. This implies that criminals can use it as a shopping list. I don't think SAPS or Second hand dealers care about checking any kind of registry. Onus is on the owner to do such things. Even with my negativity I am glad to see there is still initiatives to deter theft. Thanks guys
Mousea Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Na not meI register my carmy trailermy housemy cell phonemy petsmy domesticetc etc now I must register more......
Meerkat82 Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 I am just worried if they hack in then they have all my details and can see exactly where the bikes are that they want/ need to steal? or am I paranoid?
Dax Menday Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 @aidencholes - That's strange, site is up and running: www.cycleregister.co.za (There is an update running as we speak so this may be the issue on various browsers. Give it an hour..) @Amberdrake - User data can only be accessed by the user and queries on bicycle information only display "flag status" and not user and bicycle information. If more info is required by a query on a 'flagged as stolen bicycle' then relevant law enforcement is brought into the fold. The register is built around protection of user data and as such information like "Street address" is not required as it serves no real purpose in identification of bicycles. The great thing about identification is when an asset is identifiable second hand dealers can't quote "ignorance" if the asset is stolen. It's up to the consumer to make use of these technologies but it forces the industry to come in line. Thanks for the feedback! Keep it coming!
Dax Menday Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 @domestique: The access to the register is only a window. The database of user details is only accessed on a query by query basis, ie: bulk details are not available. This makes it extremely difficult to access multiple details. Added to that address details aren't required which gives anyone looking for information a difficult target as they only have 'suburb'.
Daniel J Méssem Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Really don't think there is a risk of the information being used by criminals Get this going and there could be a real impact on bike theft
extremelights Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Its a positive move in the right direction!!
Andrew_ew Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 It sounds like a great idea - well done on doing something positive. One question - what stops someone from using this service to create a facade of legitimacy for a stolen bike?
MuddyMike Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 It sounds like a great idea - well done on doing something positive. One question - what stops someone from using this service to create a facade of legitimacy for a stolen bike? The assumption that the said bike is already registered....
DieVlieg Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 This exact service was suggested by the hub a while back in another thread and there was a good response for such a service to be created. I can not comment on your site as like others said it is not running ATM. I tested using IE and Chrome. As soon as it is running I'll comment to you through IM. There is huge potential here but there are a number of small things to take into consideration or else this will go down as soon as it started. For instance there is already a site like this and it is dead. Unfortunately this is not a passive initiative and users are not going to drive it. I can not wait to register.
