walkerr Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 All comes down to website security strength to me - to be of use, they surely need to store some contact details somewhere. Given how easily hackers seem to get into even financial sites these days, it's going to have to employ some pretty industrial strength protection. Assuming that part is right - seems like a great idea, and I'd be in.
Neil Davidson Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 I think this is a great initiative with massive potential and influence to curb theft and clamp down on these aggressive attacks on riders. I've never been attacked (touch wood) but a couple of fellow riders haven't shared the same fortune. It will hit home harder for those that have been affected but in the interim I'm putting my hand up to take a step in the right direction. The police have a tough enough time doing their jobs with the resources at their disposal, much like a lot of other sectors in order to improve them we have to rely on the public to come up with products and platforms to assist them, so KUDO's to you guys for this! Just registered my bikes, one step closer to making riding safer... keen to see how this takes off!
Albatross Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Are there any Data Dot agencies NOT in Jhb / Pretoria?
Long Wheel Base Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 It does sound like a good idea to me BUT if there are bicycle shops out there selling fake pinarellos whats to stop them selling stolen bikes? I agree its the buyers job to check up before buying the bike but there are plenty "newbies" out there that will still get taken for a ride. Don't get me wrong here, I think its definitely a step in the right direction but there are other aspects (that are out of our control, read corruption) that need to get sorted before it will be super successful.
popcorn_skollie Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 LBS's should offer this service free of charge with the purchase of any new bike.It is a service which is long overdue. I'm sure there will be loopholes in the system that criminals will try and exploit. But its still better than no system at all. Something had to be done and I'm glad that a step was taken towards trying to make out bikes safer. Some of us are inclined to be pessimistic about this sort of thing. I say we support it regardless.
DawieO Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.Yip, me too.
Organic Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Yip, me too. I get 404 - File or directory not found. Regarding the idea: Perhaps the original poster can comment on how the new site differs from this one: http://www.nbrza.co.za/
Neil Davidson Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 @darelinp and DawieO, i also got an access denied message when I clicked on the link. Try type in cycleregister.co.za in the URL bar....worked for me.

For those that buy second hand bikes the onus lies on you to check the register and ensure that the bike isn't stolen. It would suck buying a stolen bike and then being bust with it...
Rapunzel Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 very keen - Insurance companies should make this compulsory
Pappa Bear Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 All comes down to website security strength to me - to be of use, they surely need to store some contact details somewhere. Given how easily hackers seem to get into even financial sites these days, it's going to have to employ some pretty industrial strength protection. So if I can hack a financial site and steal money, why would I hack a bicycle site to go and steal a bike?
