How long before it is toast

I have a set or 4 year old ZTR Crests and noticed this recently. I am wondering how long before it goes pop and the spoke comes through the rim?

Do I replace now or just ride it till it goes POP and limp home.

Or is this "normal" and stays like this for ages?  Tension feels the same as other wheel, so I don't think it is that.

Maybe it is the Stans and age? Seems to be brass nipples so it is not really corrosion. I just wiped the dust so you can see the cracks better.

Your eyes were slightly bigger than that icon :-)

Maybe it is the fact that I am trying to keep up with me W2W partner and thus trashing the wheel

..slightly off topic...just noticed the ZTR sticker guide refers to tires, and not tyres

Schooled.

How old is it and what do you weigh?

My Crest (rear) cracked longitudinally on the inner wall. (I'm 84kg and don't/didn't thrash it)

I'd be interested to hear from the wheel boffins if that's a rim or a build issue.

They are 4 years and a bit old....This only happened on the rear wheel, the front is 100% I am 90 ish kg.... But weight should not cause this as the design for where the spoke sits is exactly the same for the arch. In my opinion the same will happen on arch.

"max recommended rider weight"

86kg

although you're barely over, guess its just down to how much they've been ridden

if i were in your position id get a ZTR arch or something similar to replace it with.

personally i wouldnt go ztr, but i dont have a proper reason for it, i just dont like them :/ and can be forgiven for wanting a matching replacement, but why replace it with the same thing if its just going to happen again?

It is toast already.  Replace and ride!  Those cracks are from fatigue due to flexion.  More spokes and a heavier rim will delay the process but you have to expect that in a wheel.  It is just that a well built, durable wheel may outlast the rest of the bike.  Keep the light rims for race day.

But the arch is the same design? So the spokes pull at the same place. Do you think it is the flex causing it? Hence on arch it will not flex?

Edit: btw when I got mine 4 years ago I am sure the limit was 90kg.

And that limit is in THEIR build wheel not just the rim build with different spokes ?

I had exactly the same happen on a ZTR Crest, Also on the rear wheel. I decided to replace it with an Arch rather. I do run Crest on another bike as well and haven't had issues. I might be completely wrong but I had the feeling mine started cracking due to the terrain I was riding and the additional hammering it took being a HT bike. On my Dual I haven't had any issue.

Oh yes, replace it now. Not worth taking a chance with a wheel. It might cost you a lot more if that wheel fails in a spectacular way.
