Red Barn : New trail features

We went riding at Red Barn yesterday and our favorite riding spot seems to be getting better and better. Super stoked to see all the new berms and jumps going up...

They are not compacted yet, but once the work is finished this is going to be the best riding in Gauteng by country mile.

My only gripe would be the jump designs: Why all the the tree stumps on the jump lips? I know it ( the logs ) is less maintenance, but a compacted "dirt lip" would be much better. IMO the logs kills the flow over the jumps, and less experienced riders are more likely to get bucked.

I would also prefer it if the jumps were table tops...it improves our skills and teaches us how to jump and ride better.

Otherwise : GREAT JOB!

Sounds like you want to ride at the PWC bikepark.

The Barn is an awesome spot to ride!! With regards to the logs, I rode the track with the owner (of the barn), he's also the trail builder and I asked him about the logs.

The reason for the logs are as follows:

1. They keep the jumps from eroding as quickly from rail as well as riders

2. The lip stays "perfect"

3. It allows novice riders to pop over or just ride over the jump without causing ruts in the lip

4. When hit right it shoots you over the jump!

And after the rain etc they'll probably bury half of the log so that the log just forms the lip.

In my opinion there are too many jumps, burms, bridges and a crapload of singletrack to keep in perfect condition without taking shortcuts like with the logs, or the mesh over the bridges etc

PS. I did manage to clear most of the jumps, even with the logs and the sand still being somewhat soft (rode there Friday morning)

is this the new section on the otherside of the road?

Yah. But there's a few jumps in the making in the corner by the cement factory (on the trials course side of the farm)

I didn't get far enough into the ride to find the log lipped jumps before my wheel ate my RD but the new berms look like they will be cool once compacted. Possibly overbuilt? Each berm looked like it had enough sand to fill a small swimming pool. But I'm not complaining. Just wish I had that much sand to play with at some other trail building venues... :P

I rode a drop there which I hadn't seen before which was awesome. There's not too much on local trails which put me out of my comfort zone but this came close. Hectically steep (probably over 60 degrees) and about 10m high. You have to gap over the bench cut path you have just battled to ride up. Add to that it's very rutted... probably from some guys locking the rear all the way down. Did I mention steep? Kudos to the trail builder for putting in very challenging obstacles.

log jumps vs less jumps/eroded jumps - Ill take log jumps every time!

thanks for this info, will be back the BRB soon!

I really enjoyed the new features!

I was planning on a hard training ride, but we ended up fooling around and repeating every new jump about 5 times.

Here is my brother getting some air, my photography skills lack a bit...
