New Rims or Not

Just been informed by my LBS that my ZTR Crest rear rim has got a "Hop" in it. They have been trued fine, but he suggests I replace the rim.

I am sure that I recall exactly when i happened, and it was about six months ago, so I have been riding with the "Hop" for a while now.

The LBS suggested getting ZTR Arch Ex, and using the current spokes and hub from the crests. I am still waiting for a quote, but this is not an expense I planned for.

The question is should I risk riding on the wheel, or should I replace it now?

I will probably have to do the front as well, the Arches only come in Black and my Crests are white, black at the rear, white in front will look ridiculous.

If it has been trued and it's more a cosmetic issue than structural then ride it till it's dead, you not running rim brakes so you will notice very little difference with a hop. When you mean hop the rim wall has been bent out a little? Surely the lbs will know how to knock it reasonably flat again, that's even very doable diy?

As Skylark said - ride it till it's broken. I suspect they meant that it has a flat spot somewhere along the circumference. In some cases a rebuild will fix that, but in some cases it's a new rim.

When you build a new rim you should always get a new set of spokes as well though - and the bike shop should have told you that. The Arch has a different profile to the crest anyway, so it would need different spokes (shorter) otherwise it could compromise the integrity of the build itself.

But for now - ride them.

I am looking at getting new wheels in he next few months, so I will ride them until then.
