It is obvious you know very little with regard to service or maintenance of this part of the bike by what you describe and what others say will be correct if using the right tools which you obviously do not have by sticking things in and wiggling

Some of you guys are hard   It would be nice if we all just knew everything, wouldn't it. But it doesn't work like that. You get to learn things when you have it in front of you. That's all I'm trying to do here, is learn.

at least do some internet research via google or watch YouTube vids

It's the Youtube vids that led me to believe that a 10mm Allen key bolt goes in there, but there is nothing of the sorts. I need a camera!

I would take your bike to someone like what you are doing tomorrow as you are likely to do more damage and cost you money from doing the wrong thing.

that is what I mentioned I would be doing 7 posts up.

For a start, look at the parktool Website for repair and service tutorials.

Thanx for that

So after a lekker Sunday like drive around the Southern Suburbs going from bike shop to bike shop I have returned without a hint of happiness in me. They either dont have the correct tool to remove the free hub or they can only do it next week ( but I think they themselves dont have a tool). A few of the shops suggested that the noise might be dirt (I think so to), the play is normal and so is the skipping, according to Grant at Trail n Tar. Bought myself a cassette removal tool, removed the cassette, sprayed a crap load of degreaser in the free hub (from whichever way I could get in there), let it sit and then used compressed air to spray out all the gunky liquid. It kinda looked like a liquid caramel, mud I guess. Anyway, cleaned and oil as much as I could, assembled and

VOILA!

Not as quiet as I thought it would be, but an improvement of note. Much better than before. One shop I never got around to was Epic bike shop. Gonna have to leave that for another day.

Thanx to all for the advice and encouraging me to get the proper tools.

Cheers!

You might want to get that freehub stripped and properly regreased. All you've done is stuffed up the grease, and blown around the remains. They really aren't difficult to strip.

Your freehub is now being lubricated by a grease/degreaser mix, which is not good to say the least.

Rule 1: It's generally not a smart idea to use compressed or pressurised anything on a bicycle

Why do you think that it is the freehub>

After removing the cassette, is there "play" (left to right) on the hub?

BTW: What Falco said.....you have now removed all / most the grease.....and the Freehub won't last long.

What hub is it? I could not see from your previous posts, if it is a Hope for example then you do not need tools to get the Freebody off......

Okay, this is what I have, not the best of pics, but hope you guys can make out what it is.

Last pic! That's the little critter in the centre I cannot get a tool for. Any advice would be appreciated.

That little "critter" in the center takes a normal allen key, just measure the size you will need, but it looks like a 12mm

Then there should a smaller one on the other side.

If you post the MAKE of the hub it will make things easier, you can also try and just pull the freebody off.

I see no wording or anything to give me an idea of what make it is, I also tried pulling but it wont budge.

In your last picture, is the axel already removed? The part with the two lock nuts like in picture 2?

If so then look into that side and you will / should see another allan key type thing.

Then you can use allen keys and unskrew the axel

Just came back from Epic Bike Shop, thanx to Neville for helping me out there. Below is a pic of what it looks like, not the exact same one but just like it. Allen key used was a 7/16, it had to go in a vice as the freehub had a bit of inside rust to it which made things extremely difficult. There was no way I was gonna get this off on my own. Neville ordered a new one and it will be here by Wednesday  . Great service from him, he didn't even charge me for the labour.

Man I am glad I have a uncle and cousin that showed me how to fix most things on my bike.  And glad that I got most of the tools I need to fix my bike (all but a shifting spanner - for what ever reason I can't find my shifting)

Good luck and remember keep the degreaser away from your wheels.  It is never a good idea to use degreaser near bearings.

And youtube has a vast amount of clips on bike repairs.  Most things you have questions on can get a less sarcastic reply on youtube than on thehub

Thanx Shimby, I would very much like the bike to go in for a full inspection and service, but the cash is a problem. So I'm gonna do it bit by bit.

It's Youtube that said to use a degreaser and then to oil it. And as for the sarcastic replies, I have learned to take lifes comments with a pinch of salt. Either that or I end up in jail  :whistling:

Then who's gonna ride my bike?
