Rear Derailleur hitting frame

Hi ,

I just bought a new Giant Revel 0 29er, with Deore rear derailleur.

Problem is, the derailleur is hitting the chainstay every time I hit a little bump.

I do not think this is normal, but the design seems to make it very difficult not to hit the frame.

Any suggestions on how to correct this ?

The bike is going back for them to have a look at this, but I am not sure there is much that they can do to correct.

Sounds like the derailleur is not fitted correctly or is faulty.  There is a stop built onto the derailleur that hooks onto the derailleur hangar that prevents it from moving too far forward.  Check that it is in place and has not broken off.

My thoughts exactly!

Tension the B-setting screw.

Thanks.

When I get it back this afternoon and the problem is still there, I will check the B-setting.

When taking the bike back this morning, I looked at the other Giants on the floor, and they were all the same as mine, all knocking on the frame when lifting it up with one finger.

Maybe a bit more tension on the B-setting will fix it.

  • Check chain length.

Log shot, but possibly wrong hanger installed during assembly?

Check the length of the cable outer leading into the dérailleur.  If it's too long, it can also push the dérailleur forward, and it will seem like the B-screw is loose. (If you're not convinced that this can be a problem, try installing a 50mm length outer) **Edit looks OK'ish in second pic that just loaded.

Thanks for the comments.

Chain lenth seems to be OK.

Same hanger bracket on all these bikes.

This is a 2014 model. Looked at the 2015 model yesterday, and they are even closer and hitting the frame even easier.

Tightened the B-setting screw. Seems to be better.

is the bike shop cajees?

bit difficult to say from the pic but as per the arrow the little black tab should be on the left hand side of the deraileur hanger. would be very careful of said bike shop. perhaps you should start looking for someone else to help with your bike queries?

I don't think you will solve this problem entirely without changing components. Seems the frame dimensions interfere with the dérailleur travel.

Stick a some rubber on your frame so you can't hear it!
