Brake Oil Leak or Faulty?

Okay, so I got me a set new Deore brakes from CWC at a awesome sauce price but I found one small error, the rear brake is not pulling like it should.

The rear brake lever goes almost all the way up to the bars before it locks or even brakes, I also noticed inside the packaging there was a spot of oil where the caliper was placed, quite big but not huge. I also then inspected the brakes and found what you will see in the attached pictures.

All I want to know is, is this "common", will a bleed fix the brake or is this a faulty error on the brake itself.

Please have a look at the images you will see the stuff around that little nut where the hose goes. I am in Pretoria and CWC is quite far away so I don't really want to send them back, but if needs be you know :P

Looks like grease maybe?

A re-bleed or re-centering of the calipers might help - it does sound like it needs it. I'd contact CWC and see what they are willing to do.

Okay cool, the front one is nice and clean around the hose part there where it goes into the caliper so something is up. I am thinking a re-bleed would do the job. I shall contact them and see what they have to say. Thanks

Well this is what it says in the product description:

"Fully Bled lever and caliper.."

And the front one pulls like a dream, so they must be pre-bled then.

The front is easy to bleed from the word go, the rear takes work, the factory pre-bled brakes are good to go as they don't bleed it like we do, they have special machines to pre bleed.

That grease looks like the hose has been cut and re-installed , a quick bleed and you will be ready to go.

Was about to say exactly what Wyatt said. But just email CWC to inform them of what's wrong. Just for in case it might effect the warranty, I doubt that it will but an email informing them can't hurt

These brakes are very easy to bleed though. Took my 20 mins to bleed the front and back on my Cuz's bike. Just make sure you use the correct oil

Okay coolios, now I just have to get together some more pennies and save up again for this re-bleeding, or maybe CWC is cool enough and covers that for me :P

It looks like grease but might also be residue from the mineral oil leaking out slowly.

It seems the hose may not be correctly seated or the ferrule (olive) damaged. Maybe just the hose-nut is loose.

A 'bleed and burp' as Wyatt puts it will refill the lost fluid and restore performance for a while but that hose joint seems to be the source of the problem and needs to be looked at.

Given how far away you are from CWC maybe ask them if they will pick up the cost of fixing at your LBS...it is not a big job.

Quick question, if you shorten a hose, do you have to re-bleed the brake then?

Yes. 1 small bubble is all it takes to reduce performance. Did you shorten it?

No I haven't done anything to the brakes, I was thinking about it and I have google'd it so I just asked here as well, it is something that I am going to have to do as well.

I am hoping to take it to my LBS and then just have CWC cover that part of the costs.

Why is it that the rear is not as easy as the front brake to bleed? or what is different between bleeding the front and back?

For starters, a longer hose ,it needs more fluid and also gets much more bubbles.

The earlier ones were easy to do because of the bleed method.
