How do I magnetise a bolt?

Hi All

I have many different lights using different chargers to charge the batteries. Too many chargers to carry with me.

I would like to utilize small magnetized bolts to hold the supply onto the positive and onto the negative of the battery.

I have tried this by holding it by hand and it works.

What I have tried so far is

1) Rubbing the little bolt in one direction on magnets - different types and strengths

2)  Tried the soldering gun thing

3)Tried winding the bolt up with insulated copper wire and putting 12v through it.

All these did not work.

The bolt is not stainless and can be picked up with a magnet.

Anybody able to assist with some help please?

Thanks

I think you need quite a bit more than 12V if you want to noticeably magnetize a bolt.... Car battery? 12V is good for charging needles and things for compass gimmicks, but not much else.

Wait... A car battery is 12V isn't it. Hmmm. How thick was the wire you used?

Battery is not magnetic.

12V sparks enough to tell me not to go any higher! I skrik for this sort of thing.

I tried different thicknesses,  From braided copper wire to thick single core.

Why not use crocodile clips? Battery terminals are usually lead and  magnet will not attract to it.

You have too much time on your hands.Just carry all the chargers.

There is no space  for a croc clip and I am scared of shorting out the charger if it touches the side,

The terminals are definately not lead and a magnet sticks to it,

Prefer not to carry five chargers with me when touring and also, what if there is no power?  Power bank sorts this out for me.

You cannot magnetise bolts to the extent that you could call them magnets - you can only magnetise them that they have a weak field.

Stick rare earth magnets on the battery terminals with metal Pratley's putty.

Thanks Porqui, it makes sense now.

Have rare earth magnets and never thought of the putty thing....
