How to use Strava without your phone

Tired of taking your phone with when you go out jogging/riding? Here's how you can log your run/rides on Strava whilst leaving your phone at home (for those of us that do not have Garmin watches)

Unfortunately it's not cheap (if you buy it, and at the end of the day probably better to get a Garmin watch), but maybe you are about to upgrade your cellphone contract and looking at what options are available for a runner/rider?

  1. Get yourself a Sony Smartwatch 3 with integrated GPS.
  2. Do the whole Android wear setup thing - http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-set-up-an-android-wear-watch/
  3. Download runkeeper (setup account) on your android phone and sync it with your watch using Android wear.
  4. Setup https://tapiriik.com/ to sync your Runkeeper and your Strava account.
  5. You can manually sync your 2 accounts using Tapiriik or you can pay them $2 a year to sync it automatically every time you log an activity.
  6. Go running/riding, leave phone at home.....and remember to start the GPS on your watch.
  7. When you get home the watch will auto sync your activity to runkeeper and someone will send you a kudo on Strava.

Strava is looking at connecting to android wear directly.....just not now. That's how to do it currently until then.

Hope that helps if you're into that sort of thing.

Also, if you're into chasing KOM's on Strava the Sony Smartwatch 3 has another nice little surprise for you.

The chaps at Brave the Skies have been working on a stand-alone version of their Ghostracer Android app, specifically for the SSW3. When finished you'll be able to load up segment times (KOM's and PB's) to the phone and just glance down to your wrist to check how far ahead (in my case behind) you are from the virtual racing ghost in that specific segment.

More info below.

Hmm would think we all want a phone on us anyway if we go out riding for emergencies etc. Hence this does not really seem to solve anything.

The real challenge is battery life when using a phone as tracker and am aware of two solutions:

1) Take a small battery pack along (is what I do on rides over 5h)

2) Switch all functions except for GPS on the phone off to extend battery life. Never done this but have been told that adds another hour or 2

@Ossie NL

I have switched off everything on my phone save for the GPS and that certainly does extend battery life. I also have a small powerbank as well for backup power.

It's all good, but I got to a stage where when I go out running or riding I would like to get away from technology and phone calls and annoying sms' and reminders etc etc  (focus only on the run/ride....whilst still logging on Strava to feed my inner geek)....what did we do in an emergency before we had cellphones?

but I understand what you mean bud.

I also use Tapiriik. It sync all my files between Garmin Connect, TrainingPeaks, Strava, my indoor Vitual Training App and drops all the files into Dropbox for my coach.

Within half an hour from stopping my files are all synced. Great little tool.
