Hello everyone,

I just started biking and I'm new to the forum.10 days ago I bought a Scoot speedster 20 and got the basic pedals with it. I would like to buy new pedals and road shoes to improve my riding. Been reading online and so far found some good reviews about the Shimano SH-R088 Road shoes and Shimano PD-5800 Carbon SL Pedals, the pedals I could buy it at the closest store where I live (Green Point) but I can't find anywhere the road shoes. If I would buy these shoes and pedals I would spend about 3000 R and that would be a good price.

I ride 50 to 60 Km at time and go out 4 times at week for now.

Seeing that I'm very new and don't really know much about it I would appreciate if you could suggest me some good pedals and road shoes,my budget would be 3000 R or a bit more. I would need to buy them on a store located in Cape Town.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I bought some speedplay' on the hub...best pedal I've had....no looking down when you clip in ...'cos of the dual sided entry. ..cleats are high maintenance tho ...but worth it imo...Bridge cycles in Die River are having a sale on their Spez shoes...could be worth a try....save some bucks....????

I had shimano mtb shoes and they were great. Comfortable and lasted very good. The road pedals however I found the cleats were very big and also struggled a bit to get my foot in, as the front part of the pedal is very flat. Went over to the look keo classic 2, and so far very happy with them.

shoes and pedals are a very personal choice. Best to try on as many pairs of shoes as possible and buy the ones that fit, not the brand that others recommend.

if you have narrow feet, Specialised, Sidi and Northwave are good. If you have wider feet, Shimano, Pearl IZumi, Gaerne and Bont are good.

There are too brands to mention so best you take a day off and find a store with a broad selection of shoes and start trying shoes on.

BEWARE THE FALLACY OF SHOES NEEDING TO BE TIGHT FITTING! CYCLING SHOES MUST FIT WELL IMMEDIATELY. Heat mouldable features are an added bonus.

Choice of pedal depends on whether your bio mechanics has any anomalies. Knee drift can be corrected with orthotics or wedges but its best to get a professional bike fit to establish what you need. in terms of the correct pedals and cleat set up.

Some people can live with pedals with lots of float, others can't wrap their minds around it.

Yes, most definately.

take it from someone who recenly had to clear out a shoe rack of unused cycling shoes. Do not buy shoes online, try on as many pairs of different brands and models as possible. Comfortable cycling shoes are worth more in time than aero wheel, aero frames or helmets combined!

I've not used an Vittoria or Suplest road shoes:

I have used Gaerne, Carnac, Specialised, Sidi, Shimano, Northwave and Bont.

Of the shoes CWcyles lists on their site I really the Bont shoes. The last is wider than normal and they bring in weird sizes as well as standard sizes. The Bont Roit is a real bargain since it is also a heat mouldable shoe like the Vapor and Vapor +

if you like the Bont shoes and CWCycles does not have your size try Epic Bike Shop in Wynberg (about 20min drive from Green Point)
