MTB Newbie - Randburg

As per the title, I have just bought my first MTB and am keen to get out and ride when I get back to SA at the end of Jan.  I would like to join a group but am a little concerned that I am not fit/fast enough initially.  I may be a little sensitive but can't stand the idea of disrupting other people's enjoyment because they feel obliged to wait for the slow bloke at the back!

So could do with help in one of two ways, either a.)  How do I know if I am fit/fast enough to join a club (The swamp dogs look pretty much up my street from an ethos point of view), or b.)  Is there a club that will be honest enough to say "look bud, you need another 12 months of hard work before you can ride with us"...

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Just rock up and ride.

Leave from Fratellis at about 7am on a Saturday morning and there will be lots of guys to ride with.

Announce yourself in the bunch and enjoy the ride. If you get dropped, keep to the trail and hop onto the next train...

Always remember..... Everyone was once the unfit guy. I'll never forget it, no matter how strong and fit I get. People waited for me plenty, and did it with a smile. If they wanted to go long and fast, they told long before so I could sit one out or go to cycle Park and work on some skills. I just wish I could turn corners.

I am not part of the swamp dogs but I know quite a few of those okes and ladies and I have joined them on a few outrides before and they have never left anyone behind. Some might ride out front for a few km's but they will stop and get the group back together often.
