According to my understanding of the wording in the policy "Professional cyclists" are ones that ride with registered trade teams or racing teams, they are registered with CSA and have to have their own seperate insurance to cover any accidents and incidents which may occur whilst training and racing.

If you race overseas, you will only be granted an international racing license if you have proven, proper medical and other insurance in place, no matter what age group etc. I believe it to be similar for the racing and professional teams.

Good question that ...what does the insurance company regard as a professional ? I would assume that it means someone who is paid to cycle as a profession...but we all know that insurance companies love their own definitions!

I would also agree that professionals need cover..but can see the logic against excluding them in this regard (although don't necessarily agree with the logic). Professional cyclists expose themselves to potential cycling related danger on a more regular basis and at a higher risk potential than non-professionals. This leads to more risk exposure..which means higher insurance premiums. If I was being charged the same premium as a professional but had a lower risk categorization then that would not be kosher.

I also assume that professionals are covered either by their own insurance or their employer (ie sponsor). Doubt there are any professionals out there who haven't insured themselves sufficiently. Is it CSA's responsibility to ensure that the pro cyclist has cover ? No..I dont think so.

All good points Griffin and I think I agree on the term "as a professional"

That said even as a non-professional who places and gets limited prize money, are they then considered as professionals? All a bit grey, but I guess the wording will only be tested if someone really trying to make a point by claiming (which IMHO is unlikely).

Your last sentence is key though, "Is it CSA's responsibility to ensure that the pro cyclist has cover ? No..I dont think so. "

Is it CSA's responsibility to ensure every other cyclist has cover? No, I don't think so either.

asa is 135 and all i get is a screen printed number...

Fair enough, but at least that money 'should' all go the ASA and help to uplift the sport.

I have no problem with the money going to CSA and in particular the provincial body (I think KZN MTB deserves every penny). I have an issue with the cover I don't need going to a corporate who isn't really offering anything.

It is not about the cash, it is about the principle.

LOL I'm glad you put quotes around the should......because we all know that ASA is as about as corrupt as Jacob Zuma....if not worse!

but yes...I do kinda object to being forced into buying something I had no hand in deciding on or researching

Like having to pay taxes, insurance, medical aid, your domestic workers (if you better half decided to employ them) charities, donations, just about any emotional purchase ... which could include bicycles and bike accessories.

We all know where the money "should" go and how a lot of the money ends up, in some administrator's wallet or corporate company's.

It is one of those things, paying for "hidden" fees will always be there. Do not get be started on banking fees, now that really gets my blood boiling.

CSA fees, not problem, at least there is value to be had, a lot of the above-mentioned list (which is not comprehensive) I do not see so much value in it. Perhaps with the exception of my house keeper, she is a keeper and worth her weight in gold and costs as much.
