Good Evening.

My father and I are thinking of doing the half-marathon of the 2015 Sabie MTB Ashburton Investment Series. I would like to find out how technical the race is? Compared to local trails like Groenkloof or the Big Red Barn?

Kind Regards.

If it rains, very very technical! If not, there is great flowing single track!

Jeep track and forestry roads take you up the mountains! I would suggest you guys train lots of climbs and get the fitness up! Do multiple climbs at groenkloof on the Onion climb or go out and ride breedts neck a few times in the next month to get use to the amount of climbing you will do at Sabie!

Good luck and have fun! Best place to ride a bike (in the dry)!

Groenkloof  is more than enough prep for the technical stuff, except for the odd drop off which can be steeper and longer than anything that Groenkloof has to offer. Unless it rains, and then the game changes dramatically. If you are on facebook go to the Sabie Experience page and check out the video on the prologue most of the 40 km is featured there. The one thing that I would advise is to train for a lot of climbs, it might sound crazy but the odd  Breedtsnek ride would help although you will ride 60 km to prepare for 40 but it is the only ride near Gauteng that has the equivalent climbing (+- 1000m). A lap of Groenkloof only gives you 300m of climbing.

Take a good look at the ground at the start because all you are going to see is sky - i. e. - climbing. Brilliant race, last years half was muddy but ridable.

Check out the highlights package of last year's Sabie Experience (Dec 2014) tomorrow evening on SS8 from 21:00-21:30. Apparently repeats will be on 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18 Jan 2015 - SS8 (SuperCycling). Hopefully you will get an idea of the area and routes.

where do you park for  the breedts ride?

There is a farmer who accommodates the MTBikers for a fee, the entrance to his property is just past Hekpoort on your left virtually opposite the start of the Breedts gravel road.
