Giant Anthem X29er?

So I have three choices:

2014 Trance for 24k

2015 Trance 2 for 27k

Dropper post add R 3.5k

Or 2015 Anthem for R30k with dropper included

Which would be best value?

Can afford either.

This is a great predicament to find yourself in. I think if I went straight for the Trance I would've always "wondered....what if?" But at the end of the day you need to check what type of riding you are going to and base your decision on that.

Also, any decent bike store that are willing to take R30 000 off of you, should be willing to give you a demo bike to ride. My LBS gave me 2 bikes for a whole weekend of trail riding.

To get back to the OP .We both weigh 100kg .We need all the traction we can get from both wheels and as much as I like the idea of 27,5 ,I think 29 is the way to go .I remember very well the climbs in Groenkloof where I just spun out and lost traction on my 26 'wheels .My latest bike is a 23 inch frame 29er .BIG PEOPLE NEED BIG BIKES !

erm, I'm 105kg and my 26 hasn't ever failed me ito grip. What failed you was probably *** tires running too much pressure. BTW - 29 gives you hardly any extra traction over a 26. Marginal at best. What gets you better traction is tire pressure, rubber compound, tread pattern, tread depth.

My mate had kaaaaaak bontrager tires on his fuel ex (26er) and was always spinning out on the slightest incline with a bit of technicality. Gave him my old Hans Dampf tires, ran them at a much lower pressure and he could not believe the difference.

+1

I'm 5"11, 200 pounds (Shucks man are we in the States?) and my Anthem fits me like a glove.

easy - anthem can get outgunned, and has a head angle that's almost 3 degrees more than the Trance.

Trance will inspire so much more confidence on the techy stuff, and will still be able to keep with the Anthem on longer rides. The longer travel is slower myth is just that - a myth.

What gave it credence in the past was bad shock design when it came to bikes which had higher leverage ratios, which is being rectified now through proper pro-pedal / climb switch etc and better suspension kinematics.

I feel it's more about the rider than anything else, Nino on a Scott hardtail with steep head geo and 80mm suspension will trash 99% of Trance riders on any technical downhill ... the Trance will give the inexperienced rider more confidence than Nino's bike though.

But as proved by himself, 27.5 vs 29 is not so important, they did the 2014 Epic on 27.5's

So would the trance, if you gave it a chance...

6ft 105kg (231lb)

Anywhooo......

OP, listen to the Captain and get the Trance.....Fullface helmet with baggies just looks soooo much more cooler.

True dat......but those guys used their umbilical cords to workout chain lengths and gear ratios. Most of the guys buying Trances and Anthems now do so to get rid of work stress and work off the beer belly.

huh?

When did that come into it? All I'm saying is that unless you're racing, competitively, for position (as in top 20) the Trance would be the one to get as it is a far more capable, forgiving and confidence inspiring ride than the Anthem. Especially if you prefer technical singletrack and the stuff that that normally brings. Baggies and full face has fookall to do with it.

BTW - that pic of me? That's me riding my Reign X in Jonkershoek on the DH trail.5

Exactly. And if you give Nino a Trance, he'd be able to do far more with it. Same as if you give Greg Minnaar a cyclocross bike. He'd smash pretty much everyone here, but he wouldn't use it to ride Enduro.

Not dissing....just kinda feel that I should've maybe looked at the Trance as well.
