Not sure about the back but it is defiantly 8 speed. As others have suggested a good start might be to get a higher ratio cassette or even a compact crank if you do not want to go the route of upgrading the whole groupset.While browsing at my new favourite online store I have noticed they sell a 11-28 8spd shimano cassette which you might want to try as a cheap start (http://cyclosport.co.za/cassette-road/4732-shimano---cassette-11-28t---8spd.html) - they do not have stock of the part at the moment, but give them a call I am sure they can order one for you as it is something they normally stock. They were very helpful with ordering stock for me
