Exactly... thing is yes we should ride behind each other.. and some of us do... but go to europe and youll see they also ride next to each other and the cars "can" go around them still.... (why cant our cars in SA make a car that it steering wheel will be able to pass a cyclist safely)?

Maybe we should get new steering wheels is what im thinking....

Ive been told soooo many times by people that they cant past us on the road.... but drive with your car in a 60 zone and stay there and you'll see "how many" cars can pass you....

Since the 1meter rule came in... have anybody been arrested or got into trouble???

Has anyone taken the time out to go to the local police station and lay a charge against a motorist who has endangered a cyclist's life?

My guarantee, as chairman of the PPA Safe Cycling Campaign, is that we will pursue any charge that has been laid and ensure it is not swept under the carpet. Lay the charge, contact Liz at PPA on 0216898420 and we'll ensure the law is enforced.

However we have to accept that there is no supreme being looking out for cyclists who will get the ball rolling on laying a charge against a motorist. No point whingeing about motorists in social media and forums if we can't use the laws that PPA pushed so hard to get passed.

good points.

so folks get those go-pro's out of spying on the neighbours duty and onto your bikes to collect evidence.

PS: I did last year and was told that there's nothing the cops can do I must report it too the traffic police. So I phone Hillstar and they say they can only act on moving violations. So I ask them why they drive behind people who are talking on cell phones and they don't stop them they say they can't stop them without justifiable cause......&*^$#%?????

Maybe if the people hired to enforce the law actually knew what they can or cannot do then maybe we can actually get somewhere. At the moment it looks like death is the only action that results in reaction.

And if you haven't got anything to record it?  What's to say that it happened at all?

On Friday afternoon I was nearly taken out cycling home by two dump trucks on Kommetjie Road near the jumps that were going to the municipality next to the sports fields.  It was on a section with a red line and no shoulder and both of the trucks came close enough that I could almost feel them brushing my arm hairs.  This was in a section where I could not be any further out of the road, and the trucks tyres were driving on the red line.  I followed them to the depot and just found the trucks with no drivers.  Ask where the drivers are and get noncommittal replies and "don't know"s.  No municipal branding on the trucks either so i don't even know who to complain to.

But what proof do I have besides my stained undies?  Does it not become a he said she said kind of argument?

and just thinking out loud here but what happens when a group of cyclist encroaches on a motor vehicle from behind? I've seen some cyclist lose their marbles in traffic because a motor vehicle is too close to the yellow line or too far left.

In such a situation the motorist cannot do much since by the time they see the cyclist and respond the bugger on the bike is already either at the accident or past it and busy fluking his lungs out.

What this really calls for is a total revamp of the road traffic act and cyclist and pedestrians really need to be protected more proactively.

What will stop taxis from using a cycling lane as their personal loading zone? traffic authorities have no appetite for taking up the taxi battle.

anyone ever won a case against a taxi?

I hope that she also made a point to motorists about this:

It is 1M not 1,5

Heck anything more than the current "30cm" / "as close as you can squeeze next to a cyclist rule.
