Safe Commuting Route Newlands - Green Point

Hey there,

I am really tired of being squashed on the trains and although I have a monthly ticket I would like to know if anyone has any fairly safe routes to share from Newlands to Cape Town?  Not too complicated but where I can avoid most of the taxi's and buses in the morning...

I have an awesome weekend route to work in town which I take when I want to wake up early which is round the peninsula Suikerbossie/Bantry Bay/Camps Bay and eventually to Green Point but when I want to go direct in 45-60min I need a faster route...

Thanks :)

Palmyra/Campground Rd/Liesbeek Parkway past Hartleyvale Stadium,

through Woodstock on Lower Main Rd,

right onto Lower Church St and left onto the Cycle Lane into the Foreshore area.

Wind your way through Town and into the V&A Waterfront,

and out onto Beach Rd which is juct behind the stadium.

That's the way I go.

I am sure there are a few variations of that.

Safety may be an issue in some places (it always is these days).

^^^ What he said!

Plus there are more than enough people riding in that direction in the mornings. Why not wait at one of the intersections and ask someone if you can tag along and ride in with them?

I was told not to do Rhodes Memorial alone early in the morning ...... and haven't tried it yet either, but it was also an initial thought ....

I do Campground, Liesbeeck, Malta, Albert into town. the only small hick-up is at the circle in Albert Rd. Have to pay attention at the guys speeding through it.

I leave at 5:45am in Claremont and it's smooth sailing all the way ....

Afternoon's the same route, but have been looking at crossing at Rondebosch Station or Newlands Station as Campground/Palmyra crossing gets a bit hairy sometimes. Even the service slip beforehand is sometimes difficult to get across.

Also Albert Rd in the afternoons, have to watch out for the pedestrians ....

love it!

Is Albert Road safe? Is that not close to the notorious Gympie street? Be safe out there.

It is quite busy up on the mountain in the mornings especially on windless days.  You should have no problem.  I am up there until about 730/800 and still pass people on their way up

Never had a problem around Gympie as there is always traffic around. The section under the fly overs and around the Goodhope centre needs some caution as there are lots of homeless people.

I think Gympie's been cleaned up slightly. That bit is a bietjie rof, maar just come home at a reasonable hour and it's fine. Probably before 6:30. (That said, I've seen gals on their little basketed commuters riding there fairly late; later than any sane-minded male.) I think the whole Woodstock Exchange and other developments around are changing the flavour of the area. A few years ago, if I had to come home late, I'd detour up De Waal Drive and then down Roodebloem...
