Eugene Posted March 25, 2008 Share Yesterday I thought I'd be clever and clean my chain with engine cleaner. My chain came out looking as if it had been polished. It has never been cleaner. Is this an acceptable method of cleaning a chain? Will engine cleaner cause any damage to my chain? dirtrider Posted March 25, 2008 Share Johann will tell you that it will take out all the grease/oil/wax outta the rollers and you should npot use it !! NotSoBigBen Posted March 25, 2008 Share As per pieman and DR (i.e. no this is not up for discussion cause it works for me!), paraffin to clean the chain in a bottle occasionally (buddy coke works quite nicely) and I use Squirt (wax based) on road and mountain (more often on the MTB). ewep Posted March 25, 2008 Share One thing though, I won't leave the chain overnight in the engine cleaner (eish, is that correct?). As the grey beard wise one says, in the cleaner, scrub. Then into an old water bottle, shake it up with a bit of Clean Green and boiling water (dankie oom H), then shake it up with boiling water and that's that. On a serious note though. I have found that the chain rusts quicker if I leave it overnight.
