The MHR Rockets Funky Fynbos Mountain Bike Race is one of those true country mountain bike rides that will take you on an amazing adventure through private land in the Uilkraal Valley / Gansbaai. The routes traverse fynbos conservancies and farms, with magnificent views over the mountains to the sea. The climbs are tough and the descents along jeep tracks and purpose built single tracks are full of exhilaration and fun. Along the route there will be something for all to enjoy, whether you like technical riding and fast, fun downhills, or stunning views while riding in pristine fynbos with its fantastic flora and bird life.

Add to this the farm experience and hospitality, family activities and the Funky Fynbos Festival including some exciting new venue activities, a truly wonderful weekend getaway! 45km Monster

Deceptively short, this ride really is a monster, not for the faint hearted. The route is characterised by steep uphills, switchbacks and fast technical descents, with jumps, single track and fantastic views.

Local riders experience parts of this ride as the most difficult mountain bike ride in Gansbaai, and now the route has been extended for the race.

This year we have the distance and have added some more exciting single track.

Expect to finish tired and exhilarated! 30km Fun route for the fit and strong

The 30km ride is a fun route for the fit and strong with steep uphills and single track. You will be riding through private land on a route that is not normally available to the public. The route profile is the same in the beginning to the 45km Monster but allows you to avoid the sting in the tail.

Enjoy the view! 10km Moderately Easy Ride

This is a moderately easy ride for the not so fit that will get you out into the fynbos and give you a good workout.

Have Fun!

The 42km route still needs to be finalised as some new single track is being added, and it will also be about 2-3km longer. The climbing (total elevation) will be about 1500 to 1600m, fairly tough for a 45k route!

If you like all mountain riding - this is a very cool ride.

The weekend is also geared for families - check out the funky website

Beautiful day to go riding before the storm - the track at Flowervalley as you crest the neck and start the first downhill section - fast but smooth

Looking back at the neck and the rocky section of the downhill

The bigger jump on the avoca singletrack. This is where you should land if you want a smooth landing. This jump is rollable for those who don't like air

The drop into the rock berm - looks intimidating as you get to it but quite easy. Really nice if you get it right!

Once again looking forward to this event..Trails are looking good. Also good to see you up and running again Goosebay.Heard you broke the second Raleigh frame aswell, nice replacement though.

Yes, very happy with the replacement! Did you cycle from De Kelders last year? If yes, maybe don't do that this year - a bit more climbing is involved!

Added a little video

of the downhills after the first climb. I quite like the narrow trail - but we might open it a little just before race day.

a bit more climbing is involved!

and now youve added more climbing....

Any idea how much more yet? I remember looking up to the tower and thinking, "they can't be taking us up there can they?". Still the same distance? I like the medium distance but tough format.

I just want to ride the section we are thinking of including before I post the possible elevation - the distance will probably only increase by 2 or 3 kms, but the last climb will be longer.  We are trying to make the drop from the tower to the river before the 215 houses all downhill - hence the new single track.  So we plan to cut out the wet and the climb just before the long downhill.

So in summary - yes the climb to the tower will be hard, but the reward should be awesome

Route pretty much finalised - distance just over 43km, climbing over 1400m.

6 June 2015. Bundu bashed the new section for the long ride today. The distance is now just over 43km and the climbing just over 1400m of tough climbing. The main change is on the last climb you drop down from the 215 reservoir and have a breather before you continue - essentially splitting the climb in half. Initially the down is very tricky but then as the road improves it becomes easier and you can rest a little. At the ruin you turn left and initially the climbing is hard, then easy and you can enjoy the view. When you turn into the little kloof the track gets narrower and at the top quite rocky (or stony probably is more apt). If you do get off your bike, look back, the view is awesome. It then flattens out for a while before the last slog to the tower. That last little killer is still there. The single track on top is the same but as you drop down the jeep track you head back to 215 instead of all the way down the hill. We are skipping the muddy sections, and the new single track gives you an opportunity to enjoy the view if you did not stop at the waterpoint.

The 43km has now been upgraded to 45km - the total elevation hasn't changed much, we just thought 45 had a nice ring to it. Do not underestimate the distance on this ride, it is very tough, but if you decide to cruise it the rewards are awesome = really fun downhills including jumps on one of the first single tracks, and an extended jeep track downhill on Farm 215.
