Any advice out there on fitting thin racing tubes to your rims?

Its been frustrating trying to get a 50g conti supersonic fitted below a new gp4000 tire, without cutting the inner tube. damn tyre spanner keeps pinching the tube on the last squeeze over the rim.

any suggestions?

 

(not going to use tubbies so dont go there)

Try pumping the tube slightly first and 'lifting' the tube into the tyre. The tube should be well fitted inside the tyre, and on the rim before you attempt putting the 'beading' into the clincher. Do as much as possible by hand, and this should leve you with only a small amount of tyre left. Then take the 'tyre lever' and slot it in between the tyre and the rim wall and just push it along and the tyre will 'pop' on to the rim. It saves trying to 'lever' the tyre onto the rim, and with the little bit of air it will keep it from pinching.

LOL. Well, I followed!

 

It's the exact same way I handle "hard to get" tires. Just don't overinflate the tube prior to installing, or you'll just pinch it again with the tyre levers.

Why do you need tyre levers to FIT a tyre? I've got Michelin Superlights under my GP4000s and had no problems fitting them with my hands only.

 

I did have problems fitting tyres, any tyre, to my DRC rims. Their flanges seemed to be a little bigger then other rims.

Mampara, isn't it more to do with the tyre/rim combination?  Delgado fits his Gatorskins onto Easton rims by hand where I have to use tyre levers fitting the same tyres to Fulcrum 7's.  BUT when fitting the tyres to Fulcrum 1's I have no need for the levers?

Mampara, isn't it more to do with the tyre/rim combination?  Delgado fits his Gatorskins onto Easton rims by hand where I have to use tyre levers fitting the same tyres to Fulcrum 7's.  BUT when fitting the tyres to Fulcrum 1's I have no need for the levers?

 

and how tight the beading on the tire is.

Yip, that is why I said i had problem with my DRC rims.

 

Anyway ewep, how many times have you fitted Gatorskins to the 7's? Remember the first time is always a bitch as the rim tape is still not settled in especially if the tape is that thick stuff that comes on the Fulcrims.

OK, was the first and second time.  Never really looked at the rimtape on the 7's.  The 1's have no rimtape Wink

Never ever used levers to fit tyre's but some tyres especially cheaper ones are Censored difficult.

 

I have hands, not "bees boude" to fit tyres with scotty!!! TongueTongueTongue

Always use baby powder (on the tube before installing Embarrassed), and do as GO suggested and pump a little air into the tube which can then be seated in the tyre.

 

Start at the valve (no brainer) and you should push the valve up into the rim before seating the first part of the tyre, after which you can pull the valve back out (never ever use the nut that comes with some tubes, definite no no).

 

I also find popping the slightly inflated tube over the lip of the rim all the way round the rim so that is sits in the centre channel.

 

I never use tyre levers, but a trick I learnt from MTB is to ensure that the section of the tyre that's seated correctly is as close to the centre of the rim as possible, thus giving a little bit of slack to the last little bit you're trying to pop over the lip of the rim.

 

p.s. damn it's tough trying to write down descriptive steps for something that's second nature
