In 2015 the Tirreno-Adriatico, one of the most important Italian and  international sport events, will celebrate its 50th running in March 2015.   The best riders in the international peloton have always ridden and won it. The list of winners of Tirreno- Adriatico general classifications includes amongst others: Dino Zandegù, the first winner in 1966, Bitossi, De  Vlaeminck (6 editions won consecutively), Saronni, Moser, Rominger, Fondriest, Sørensen, Olano, Bettini,  Freire, Cancellara, Scarponi, Garzelli, Evans and more recently Nibali (2012, 2013) and Contador, winner of  last year race in front of Quintana.   The 2015 Tirreno-Adriatico, also known as the “Race of the Two Seas”, is expected to be raced by many of  cycling’s biggest stars: including two of the 2014 Grand Tour winners, Vincenzo Nibali and Alberto Contador  as well as Christopher Froome, the winner of UCI WorldTour 2014 ranking Alejandro Valverde and Joaquim  Rodriguez.   The race, which is organized by RCS Sport/La Gazzetta dello Sport, will run from Wednesday 11th until  Tuesday 17th March.

It will start from Camaiore’s renowned Lido, in the Italian Versilia region, with a  22.7km Team Time Trial.   The second stage, starting from Camaiore and finishing in Cascina (153km), is fundamentally flat and will  see the fastest wheels in the peloton as protagonists.   Cascina will be the starting location of the third stage and, as per last year, will end up in Arezzo after  203km, on the same climb that saw Peter Sagan win in front of the 2014 Road World Champion Michał  Kwiatkowski.   Saturday 14th will see a deceptively challenging fourth stage, held predominantly between the Umbrian  and Le Marche regions. The stage will start from Indicatore (Arezzo) with four King of the Mountain climbs:  Foce dello Scopetone, Poggio San Romualdo, Monte San Vicino and the final Crispiero climb just before the  short descent towards Castelraimondo (218km).   The Queen stage will be held on Sunday 15th, starting from Esanatoglia and finishing at the 1,675m of  Monte Terminillo (194km) with two KOM in the initial and central (Passo Sallegri and Le Arette climbs).   The penultimate stage, which is ideal for sprinters, will bring the peloton from Rieti to Porto Sant’Elpidio  (210km).   The 50th edition of the “Race of the Two Seas” will end again in San Benedetto del Tronto, with a final-day,  10km Individual Time Trial crowning the winner of Tirreno-Adriatico.

Route:

Stage: 1 - 11 March : Lido Di Camaiore TTT 22.70 km

Stage: 2 - 12 March : Camaiore - Cascina 153.00 km

Stage: 3 - 13 March : Cascina - Arezzo 210.00 km

Stage: 4 - 14 March : Indicatore - Castelloraimondo 218.00 km

Stage: 5 - 15 March : Esanatoglia - Terminillo 194.00 km

Stage: 6 - 16 March : Rieti - Porto Sant'Elpidio 210.00 km

Stage: 7 - 17 March : San Benedetto del Tronto ITT 9.10 km

The four champions of the cycling world for the 50° editionTurning 50 this year. The story of the Tirreno-Adriatico began in 1966, when Dino Zandegù outdid Vito Taccone. The marvel has grown, year after year. To celebrate its 50th birthday, the Race of the Two Seas will turn epic. Vincenzo Nibali, the king of the Tour, will be fighting against Spain’s Alberto Contador, Britain’s Chris Froome and Colombia’s Nairo Quintana. There is nothing better inthe world – never has there been. The “four tenors” of cycling have never challenged each other in the same race before.

At least one of them was missing in the last three years…
First place for Nibali, second place for Froome and third place for Contador in 2013. In 2014, Contador prevailed. That is all one needs to say, isn’t it? From the Tyrrhenian to the Adriatic Sea, this race is the smartest and most contemporary way of designing stage routes in cycling. It celebrates the best of Italy, thanks to a territory that allows riders not only to challenge themselves and each other, but also to have a great time (we are quite sure) in such a varied and diverse landscape. The importance of the race lies in figures: live coverage in 154 countries, with as many as 5 million people reached in seven stages. Moreover, let us not forget that the Tirreno-Adriatico was the Italian cycling event with the highest-quality participants in the last two seasons. A jewel we mustbe proud of.

The structure stays the same, with two time trials (a 22-km TTT, and the final 10-km ITT in San Benedetto del Tronto), two sprinter stages (Cascina and Porto Sant’Elpidio), one stage for puncheurs (Arezzo), a medium-mountain stage (Castelraimondo) and a real mountain stage, just like at the Giro d’Italia. This time Mount Terminillo, Rome’s mountain, one of the sharpest climbs of central Italy, will be decisive. The Giro made its way up here nine times, most recently in 2010. Climbing up the northern slope, we are in for a 15.4-km ascent with an average 6.1% gradient, peaking as high as 10%. After all, a conventional and ordinary location would not have been a suitable battleground for the “Fab Four” of cycling

This will be the 1st time all 4 "BIG DOGS" will race each other if they make it to the start line, who will win that is for the tea leaves and future to show us, Contador the defending champ is on a different program from the rest, as he looks to the Giro in the 1st part of the Giro-Tour double.

Quintana has not raced since Argentina and will be looking for race legs, Nibali looking to defend the Tour title he won in 2014, but has not shown a great deal yet, and Froome who is the form rider of the big 4 so far in 2015. TBH I see Froome and Contador on a different level to others here, and we may see a rider outside the Ist up the 4 horse men of the apocalypse on the Podium.

Important Stages for the GC 1,3,4,5,7 with the main GC stage 5

We're going to be treated to the first real fireworks of the season for the Grand Tour GC boys. The 'Fab 4' are all together in one race (when last did this happen - if ever?).

If you include Purito & Uran on the list (and Pinot) the only big name missing here to make it a full house is Valverde.

But let's not forget these guys either:

Louis Meintjes (MTN-Q)

Carlos Alberto Betancur Gomez (AG2R)

Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R)

Adam Yates (OGE)

Ryder Hesjedal (TCG)

Dan Martin (TCG)

Pierre Rolland (EUC)

Robert Gesink (TLJ)

Dani Moreno (KAT)

Julian Arredondo (TFR)

Roman Kreuziger (TCS)

Peter Kennaugh (Sky)

Jurgen Van Den Broeck (LTS)

Giovanni Visconti (Mov)

Fabio Duarte (Col)

Flipping hell, what line up - I'm really looking forward to this one!
