Hi All,

I am looking at buying a decent entry-level bike and getting into MTB.

I have been offered a 2nd hand Merida AM-800 with tubeless conversion for R 7500.

Can anyone offer any comments/suggestions if this is a good buy or if there are any other soft tails which I could consider at that price?

Thx

Jerome

Bear in mind that a dual suspension requires more maintenance (= more R's) than a hardtail...

Is this your first MTB?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I owned a Game special many years ago, so this is my first decent MTB purchase.

I understand this bike has a full service history with a LBS and is in good condition.

Tried a short ride of about 6km this weekend on a rented Merida hardtail and my ass is still sore, hence my thoughts on a soft tail

Dual suspension not Soft tail. Let me just help before the bicycle police come a moer you.

Your ass will initially be sore regardless of the bike you buy ;) Just keep doing regular short rides for the first few weeks and your body will soon adapt. Invest in a good saddle (try a few demo saddles at your LBS) and a good pair of cycling shorts (NOT Mr Price) to make the process a bit less painful. Please resist the temptation of buying one of those awful overstuffed gel saddles, or worse, a gel seat cover!

Hi all,

Have just also seen a Merida 96 1000 or a Scott Spark 40 - both for about the same price. Any ideas as to which is better and what I should be paying for a bike like this?
