Hub Bearing Life

Easton EA90 XC mountain bike wheels.

I've even done some research and found a history of the hub having an issue - so much so that Easton sent out a free hub upgrade kit.

Disappointing...

I had loads of issues with my Easton M1 hubs till I sorted out the upgrade kit, they have been running smoothly now for ages.. I have a spare spacer (the part that saves the hubs bearings) if anyone needs one, no charge, just pay for postage if you aren't in PTA, else come collect.

I'm sending my wheels into Linden Cycles on Friday. They're going to do the necessary replacements. If it is the M1 hub, I'd love to take that spacer off your hands!!

Bearing warranty on the wheels I build holds from the workshop to the gate.  Most hub suppliers will replace a bearing if it fails early- but not the labour to replace it.  I have seen Hope and other "quality" bearings fail in weeks and "cheapies" last for years. Luck of the draw.

Always remember

1. Do not pack to much grease, pressure builds up that will pop your seals.

2. Sealed bearings must always have 2 to 3 rubber seals for max protection against water and dirt.

3. If using cup and cone bearings...go with Timkens/SKF.

4. If replacing only a seal...try and go for a double lip seal or even triple lip.

When re-repacking, make sure everything is clean, otherwise u end up with grinding paste.

My 2c...use, dont use.

REPORT BACK:

After pointing out the Easton press release to Cycle Lab, that stipulates a free upgrade to improve bearing life, the Lab has thus far, gone out of their way to rectify the situation.

They said they weren't informed by the importer, which I can believe. It's one product in a large line-up by this particular importer/distributor.

So, although a little irritating, the Lab has made good!
