khm4252 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I was wondering if someone could shed more light on the whole idea of gearing on a road bike. What does a compact crank mean? What are the numbers that people throw around like 54/36 and what do they mean? Always nice to learn and be better informed.
dirtypot Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 The numbers are the teeth - 54 teeth on the big ring and 36 on the small.Compact crank normally has lower gearing for better climbing uphills at the expense of top speed. Although I have a compact crank and only notice this on some hills where you're still pedaling in top gear.
Zatek Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 You have a standard crank with 53 39 blades as standard. You big blade has 53 teeth and your inner blade has 39. A standard crank had a bcd 130mm that is the distance between the bolts 9f the chainrings. Compact crank has a 50 34 blades by standard with a bcd of 110mm. Mid compact is a compact crank but with 52 36 chain rings.
