Beginner Bike - TITAN 29R TRAIL

Hi Guys,

Firstly, sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong forum, busy getting familiar with the site.

Finally decided to bite the bullet and get into MTB. Busy shopping around for a decent bike to get started.

Was looking around for a 29er and stumbled upon the Titan Trail (2015) retailing at Cycle Lab for 7.5k. What are your thoughts on this?

Just to put this into perspective, a few had advised that if I can get away with it and afford it, try and get an air suspension hardtail, with Hydraulic Brakes, and this seems to fit the bill. Went through to Cycle Lab Megastore to have a look at it and pretty impressed. Thoughts or advice?

Can't seem to find any reviews online for this bike.

Have a look at the GT Karakoram & Silverback Vida range in comparison

The Silverback range has some good spec bikes at a reasonable price

Thanks Raf. Had checked out the GT Karakoram, but was a bit out of my price range (13k), and can't seem to find any retailers that have the Vida.

Thx Flash, most shops however seemed to be retailing that at about 9K

Where you based?

pM Wyatt Earp, he might have something for you, based in midrand.

I got my ladies entry level silverback hardtail from him, and ( as per your other thread) I went for the slightly more expensive option with air shock - still within your price range of 7k. :) happy shopping.

Of those to the Sola 4. My girlfriend has the XCR air on her bike, while not as good as a pure air fork it's not a pogo stick and is actually usable. Also it seems most of the rims on the new Silverback range are tubeless ready, which is a nice bonus.

Oh and I'm on my second Silverback and bought my girlfriend one. Love them.

I bought a Titan Trail 29R 2 months ago. Im happy. :)

Good for my needs - not planning to do the Epic or 360One with it. I use it to some trails with some friends on a social level. More than happy with it.

Airshock on it is awesome!!

Paid R 7000 for it.

Edit: I was also looking at Silverback Spectra Comp and Merida Big 9 20D. None had a airshock and not at the price that i got the titan trail for.

Looks like the Silverback just edges it on those specs.

Suntour used to have a disastrous rep which they seem to be shaking off.

Thanks JoeZipp. Had been leaning heavily on the Titan Trail 29R, but just couldn't seem to find anyone to give me feedback on it, and also couldn't find any reviews on it online. Was one of the first 'entry-level' bikes I had looked at with Air Shocks. Cycle Lab have it for 7.5k

Obviously now there's the Silverback Sola4 (2014) with the same shocks at Kyalami Cycles for 7K. Decisions Decisons.

Yeah, similar pricing for the Sola4 - 2015 Model (9k). The 2014 model is the one coming in at 7K

I see the Silverback is 8 speed and the Momsen 9 speed.  Might be costly to upgrade to 9 speed later. I think the Titan might be a better buy.  Shop around at other shops, maybe you could get the Titan for a little less than R7.5.  Phone Solomons for quotes on Titan and Momsen.
