To all the tech savy guys.

What is the advantages and/or disadvantages of a vertical vs horizontal shock?

It's not the shock placement. It's the linkage design that makes the difference.

But. Advantage to horizontal (rrunning on the top tube) is that for most designs you can run 2 bottles in the front triangle.

MTB Suspension design is extremely important, and goes way further than just horizontal or vertical.

As El Capitan said it's all about linkage design. And there is countless different designs. You will see all the brands have a slightly different layout even within these.

All designs are focused on 3 main areas, weight distribution, simplicity, and lateral stiffness.

Different combinations will make up different styles (XC/AM/Freeride/DH).

All these terms speak for themselves, so all depends on the style of bike as to what combination is likely to happen.

In my experience vertical shocks are best for XC riding as they really focus on pedalling efficiency to ensure there is as minimal loss as possible. Whereas horizontal shocks are more closely related to less pedalling efficiency.

But in recent years such advancements in technology are making horizontal shock placements much more efficient (example YETI's switch technology).

So yeah that is the low down, way more technical than one may think. If you want to read up more there are heavy reads out there.
