Sauser to ride new-look Tour of Good Hope

Three-time marathon mountain biking world champion Christoph Sauser will return to South Africa to ride the Bestmed Tour of Good Hope from February 29.

Swiss-born Sauser has been a long-time supporter of the five-day Western Cape road tour, which was previously known as the Tour de Boland.

Okay I'm entered (finally).

But this will have to be my last ASG event as I now (potentially) have enough sunglasses if I finish. I could do with a spare helmet though :D  (if subtle hints is accepted on open forums that is) :whistling:

Hi ASG,

I think I need to be honest here.

This is starting to "feel" like there is a level of arrogance happening here.

I pay you R26 000 for an entry and I am expected to be grateful for a R20 saving.

"The normal price of the ICE ID PRO is R199

Thanks to ToGH??

Honestly if I can afford an entry of several thousand rand, surely I can afford the extra R20?

Please stop trying to push products on us, please just deliver a quality event.

The value of an event does not sit in small savings on product partners, or even free larger products like the Rudy glasses, these are appreciated mke no mistake, but the real value sits in the professionalism of the event organisation and the event experience. Get those two right and there will be no need for the other peripherals....

They not holding a gun to your head. Don't like it, don't buy it. I think it is great that they make an effort to offer products at discounted prices

I am sure they are planning to have the organization around the event top notch

My response was addressed at them, unless you are working for ASG I am not sure why you felt the need to respond.

You are missing the point that I am making by miles, either that or you are just trolling again.....

I KNOW they are planning a good event, as I have had several conversations with them around this and other events, I am just reminding them of what the participants feal the important part are. The event this year had its challenges, it is expected that people who are giving them a second chance are apprehensive until they have proven that they have fixed the known issues before trying to leverage the participants.

ps: Did you do the event this year? Are you doing the event next year?

Doing it next year! Don't know why you feel the need for personal attacks. I could have been a real box and called you a box for your opinion but I did not. Get over yourself and find some help for your insecurities

Personal attack? You got a less than polite response to your less than constructive post, and now you are the victim? Ag shame, talk about insecurities.

Listen bud, lighten up.

Hi there,

We appreciate your views but please consider the following (this issue came up before as well so I am going to try and lay it to rest here if possible) - apologies in advance for a slightly long-winded reply :)

1. ASG (100% South African owned company) consists of a number of companies (with different outside shareholders) - irrelevant to most people as all are operating under the 'ASG banner' but it is important to mention this for what follows below:

2. ASG Events organises TOGH amongst other events - this company's sole purpose is to put up a great event (routes, safety, marketing, entries, sponsorship procurement, partner management, etc).  One of the functions (extremely important) is to ensure value for sponsors and partners and accommodate their requests where possible.  ASG Events is not in the business of selling products or merchandising unless it is for the benefit of one of its sponsors/partners (eg. ICE ID or ASG Sport).

3. ASG Sport Solutions (import and distribution company for brands like Pinarello, SIDI, HIGH5, Rudy Project, SIX2, ...16 in total)) is a major sponsor for many ASG events (this is why many of our ASG events is 'presented by' Rudy Project, HIGH5, etc.  We realise many riders don't get this but the investment ASG Sport has made into countless Road and MTB events over the past few years has been substantial and quite frankly many these events will not have taken place without that contribution.

4. ASG International SRL is an Italian based company owned by ASG that owns, manufactures and distribute Italian brands like SCICON (bike bags) and Ftech (clothing) - ASG International has also been a substantial sponsor for many ASG events (Ftech leader's jerseys, Team jerseys, prizes, cash, etc).  ASG International also plays a big role in marketing ASG events (like TOGH) to the international community - this is why more and more international riders are participating...

5. In the past ASG Events have been bombarded with requests for product offerings at good rates for participants (there are more than 5500 different products in the ASG combined catalogues so makes sense?) - since starting this (as an option when entering events and/or on the ASG Events online store) the uptake has been incredibly good (seems there is a demand for this and in fact we've often been asked to add even more products).  This serves 2 purposes - by supporting these promotions, riders are supporting the sponsors and at the same time hopefully getting a good deal...our challenge is constantly to do this in a classy way that does not seem to pushy...(we get your point here and one can always look at the wording used in hindsight and improve on it)...Bottom line is there ís no 'gun against your head' :) but at the same time the message has to get out there...

6. Merchandising, event branding and event promotions is an important part of some of the worlds' biggest and best sportives, granfondo - and endurance events - we'll continue to work on the recipe to get it right and appreciate the feedback.

7. We take your point that riders are primarily looking for a fantastic event experience (route, safety, riding, marshals, timing, etc.) - ASG Events is taking this extremely seriously and has the whole of the ASG group holding it honest to do so as the entire group has its name linked to this event.  A lot has been said about this to date.

8. We'll ad something related to a participant's merchandising experience to the event feedback surveys.  We'll do this to make sure riders are generally happy with what we're doing and how we are doing it - we'll tweek and adjust how we handle merchandising based on that.

9. Generally speaking it has been our experience that riders do not really care for event sponsors as much as they probably should (as a sport this is something to be taken seriously we think?).  When rider's have paid their entry they do not realise that very often the balance is 'sponsored' by some corporate out there.  Reality is that less and less companies are prepared to part with their cash to sponsor events and the effect is starting to show - At ASG we are also considering scrapping about 6-8 events from the calendar next year because they are simply not viable anymore without sponsorship.  At the same time we are approached by many other event organisers that want to hand over their events to ASG (a separate thread on the hub dealt with the substantial costs involved in presenting events).  More often than not these 'under sponsored' and loss-making events actually detract from our ASG brands as opposed to enhancing them for some participants (based on feedback we receive (on the Hub) and criticism about supposed profiteering) - this happens because (for obvious reasons) ASG the sponsor and ASG the event organiser is one and the same company for participants.

We are looking to focus on less events next year, make sure they are viable (or can be in the future, ensure good returns for sponsors, up the game as much as we can in terms of overall rider experience, etc.)

TOGH is a major future focus for ASG - not only have we gotten almost all companies in the ASG group involved, we've leveraged added value from our partners, suppliers and stakeholders to try and blow participants away.  We hope you will agree and obviously hope to see you there.

Regards

ag

ASG R20 saving? Hold me back. To bad that this year alone we were given these ID bracelets free of charge when entering a event.
