Sunglasses and eye injuries

When choosing a pair of sunglasses I tend to focus on the lenses being shatterproof to protect my eyes. How much emphasis should we be putting on the frame being shatterproof or at least able to break without sharp edges?

We had an incident where a fellow cyclist crashed into a barrier and received a nasty cut on his upper eyelid from his sunglasses frame that required stitches.A few milimetres either way and his actual vision would have been at risk.

The actual lenses did not shatter but the arm of the glasses broke and the jagged edge cut him.

Are there sunglasses that are safer out there?

Thankfully he was wearing a helmet and that saved him from a severe head injury.

Unfortunately light plastics that are used in higher end sunglasses have either cutting or piercing potential. I wouldnt have such a minor risk dictate my choice in shades.

when buying, just ensure that it doesnt fit too tight around your nose or ears. You would like the frame to slip off in a fall or accident. Thats why you always see cricket players picking up their glasses after a catch.
