Building a track bike

I am building up a budget track bike from the bits and pieces I have.  I am only in need of main ringgear (about a 52) and a rear cog (about a 12) for a track wheel.  I have a set of Shimano 105 brake calipers to swop if there is anyone near midrand that can help.

Post pics. It's yet another bike on my ever increasing list of bottomless pits.

52 and a 12? Rather a large gear. Maybe have a look at a gear chart. Is it for the track or as a commute? 52 with a 15 would be a better bet for track.

It is for the track - fixed cog, not brakes - that sort of thing.  Thanks for the advice.  I was just checking out my top gear ratio from my road bike and thought I would start with that.  Any more advice from people that ride track bikes regularly?

I am guessing at a ratio of around 52:13, about 4.  Any advice

Unless you have legs bigger than Arnold in his prime, that gear is too long - you will get left behind on even small accelerations. Assuming you are hanging in with a licensed road bunch, work on a ratio of about 3.25 to start with (49/15 or 46/14) and move from there. If you are used to stamping big gears on the road, you will have to unlearn that 'bad' habit. To put things in perspective, Chris Hoy (arguably the most successful track rider of all time - amongst other things 6 olympic gold medals) rode a 52/14 which even at that level was considered long. (ps. he has legs like Arnold too)

Sorry, can't help you with gears, I sold all mine some while back.

It's probably better to start of with an easier gear in the beginning. Gears are measured in inches for the track. The distance the wheel travels with a full crank revolution in inches. Typically they range from 88" to 100". I think a 90" would be a good start. Google "gear chart for track cycling". A 90" gear would be a 50 front and 15 back.

Enjoy, its good fun.

You can also try eBay, if you don't mind waiting a little. Unfortunately track kit is a bit scarce.

Also, table note of what Glenmx said about the 144bcd. That's the std, but just check your Cranks.

Hey, thanks for all the advice.  I guess I have a bit of hunting to do.

I messaged you based on your initial post. I have 13T, 14T and 16T sprockets available.

Thanks.  I am looking for a chain ring and rear sprocket set.  Based on all the advice offered, I would need to find about a 46 to go with the 14 or a 52 to go with the 16.
