I would do cape town => pe => baviaanskloof=> klein karoo => cape town. Then fly to durban if you really into your horse racing

I like this plan

I really like this plan too! It still hits the 1000mile target but looks much safer.

Which way back to Cape Town would you go from Oudtshoorn? Through Montagu and down to Grabouw (The tunnel between Worcester and Paarl looks scary so I'd try and avoid it) or back down to Mossel Bay and across?

Route 62 basically: Oudtshoorn, Calitzdorp, Lady Smith, Barrydale, Montagu, Robertson, Worcester, over the old Du Toits Kloof Pass (avoiding the long new Hugenot tunnel that is closed to cycles anyway. There is a short but safe tunnel on the old pass), Paarl, Durbanville, Cape Town.
