Do you have somewhere set up that people could deposit money?

You obviously have options like PayPal, or just your personal bank account.

Do you have a link to the course?

Please don't misunderstand this next statement because I am not questioning you personally, merely stating how it could be seen due to the fact we all get mail and smses nearly every day with that "Nigerian prince who needs our help" - it has potentially made a lot of people cynical.

How will people know their money is going to the studies and somebody just collecting money to go to the pub or on holiday or something?

You make a good point, and to be honest I hadn't thought past a direct deposit.

I don't know how I would prove to somebody that I'm being genuine, but I am!  I know that having fewer than 1000 posts puts me below Routjies threshold though...

If for whatever reason I did not do it then I would refund the money - I'm not JZ.  I guess that I would post up registration confirmation once I get there as proof that it's happening.

Pot, I don't want to discourage you to study further, but UCT/GetSmarter courses carry no NQF value, it's all online and there is no exams involved. They are also extremely expensive and for proper PM that would not be the right way to go.

You need to cast your net wider, look at more options and if you really need to get a piece of paper in short term, look at College SA, which is a lot cheaper for the same type of certificate and you can start immediately.

Thanks for the feedback, and the links - I appreciate it.

At this stage I'm just looking to open another door, so long term study plans won't work for me for right now.  I also like that the UCT/GS one forces you to finish each module and assignment quickly as it's a set schedule.  With the others you have freedom to do what ever you want whenever you want to do it, which for me I don't think will work - too many distractions and not enough deadlines.

I was just kind of "thinking out loud".

I will even throw down the gauntlet here and say I'll put down the first offer of assistance. Won't lie, it won't be a huge dent in the cost, but I'll get the ball rolling.

Thank you Lurch!  I really appreciate it!

I've now come up with another way of receiving donations via Indiegogo, and the page is now live.

Because of any payout delays, this won't help for the first months payment so I'll have to beg and borrow elsewhere for that.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read and respond

I am a manager at a large software development house and have a project management background.

If you want to get into project management I am happy to meet you to chat. I might be able to help as without knowing what your goal is I am a little concerned with your course choice.

I really don’t want to be negative but be careful of choosing to study PM. PM is more a type of role you grow into within a certain industry you work in. I don’t know a single PM that studied it and then got a job as a PM. Like me for instance I first did systems support in IT, then moved into a Business Analyst Role and only after a couple of years got to PM & Portfolio management in software.

My advice would be to make the move you want to but make sure it is an industry you can grow in. With you experience I would say it’s much better to study an Engineering degree through UNISA. That is if you still want to be in that industry.

Why don’t you have a look at http://alison.com? It’s a worldwide online site and I have done some courses on it. If you pay a very small amount (I can’t recall precisely but I think it’s like R200) they will mail you the certificate as well. It is accredited and some of the courses have been developed by MIT. There are over 600 courses.

So this one is a non starter...

I guess I pulled the trigger without going through it all in enough detail, and I really appreciate the effort and info that you guys have provided me with.

I've decided to go in a different direction now and am really hoping for the best with a new venture.

Thanks to the guys who did donate to my cause, but please send me your account details and I'll refund the money.

Cheers
